Well some of you may recognize this painting, because it's based off an older and smaller painting that I did. I really wanted to try out acrylics, because I feel that they may be better for the style that I'm trying to achieve. So I thought it'd be a great opportunity to redo this image. It's always been one of my favorites, but I wanted to make it bigger and in different colors! So here's the result of it.

What do you all think about the result of the acrylics versus my usual watercolor paintings?

Wow! This is so beautiful. You are REALLY talented with acrylics!!! I think I like this version a little more, because it does look so crisp and smooth. Though I also love the colors you can achieve with watercolors as well! Though I do like this color scheme. Lol! I do think you should start using more acrylics, maybe doing some mixed-media pieces to get the best of both worlds?

Aww thanks Melissa! I'm so glad you think so. I've been thinking about doing a mixed piece, but I'm having a hard time deciding what type of paper to use! I need a smooth paper that won't buckle, but so far I haven't been able to find one. Thanks again for your comments!

You're welcome hun! Yeah, I definitely think a mixed piece would be so awesome... what type of paper are you using right now? I was using Arches Hot Press watercolor blocks for my watercolor, ink & acrylic paintings, and it was really smooth and didn't buckle at all. The blocks are the ones that have the glue around most of the edges, so it holds the paper straight, and when you're done, you just use a thin letter opener or whatever to break the glue and remove the piece of paper. Dick Blick has them for $20 for the 9 by 12 size, and there's other sizes too and such.

Oh man, that's hard to say. *looks at both* I honestly can't say which I like better. The older version was great with the smoky colors, whimsical comes to mind. This one is beautiful as well, but the impression is different. It has deeper, sharper colors and I get more of an air of mystery from this Cassia. Gah, why do you make me pick?

P.S. I do really like the acrylics though, it's a nice change. I still love watercolors but it's always good to explore!

Thanks so much!! What you just wrote is exactly what goes on in my mind when I try to decide lol. I really want to try a piece with both and see how that works! I like to use watercolors on the background and perhaps acrylic on the figure to make her pop more. I wonder how that would work! Thanks again!

Hmmmb, well my two cents is that it looks a lot more solid, and a bit softer, since it is lighter and not outlined in ink like the others. It is still beautiful of course And cool to see you experimenting with different mediums!

Both mediums suit you VERY well, Nikki!

I think you may want to keep in mind then end result to determine what medium you want for whatever you're going to create...

To try to explain a bit: I agree that you do AMAZING things in watercolors, but keep in mind that the colors are softer in the end result. The acrylics seem to give you a more vibrant, more crisp, more defined feel to the end result.

Both mediums worked very well for this piece...just depends on how you want the end result to "feel"...if that makes ANY sense at all???

Gonna go a bit against what everyone else is saying and gonna go with I love the Watercolors more! I just adore how you do all the little color shifts and how colors blend.

However, neither one of us use watercolors like 'they are supposed to' we use a much more opaque and 'solid' approach and I gotta say I prefer it that way!

Either way, I think you should give acrylics a few more chances and make sure you like how they work/dont work before you decide. I never 'felt' a paint before I tried watercolors. I just LOVE how they mix and blend and am usually sad when they dry - they always look so vivid and stunning wet. <3

Aurella In reply to Starrydance [2008-01-15 13:30:20 +0000 UTC]

Aww thanks Starry! I'm so glad you like my watercolors! We definitely do use watercolors in a different way which is why I thought that acrylics might be more suited for me. I use so much watercolor pigment in my paintings, that I'm using up my colors too quickly lol. I really enjoy the way watercolors mix, but become frustrated when I really want a strong definition in something like hair strands or shiny clothing. Perhaps I should try mixing them!! Thanks for your advice.

the acrylics come off a lot stronger, your figures pop out omg WOW like with these acrylics... the watercolor makes the images soft, and kindly rememberable... the acrylics make them shockingly rememberable. if that makes sense. *ponders* and my opinion may be a bit bias, for acrylic is one of my most favorite mediums to work with

Aurella In reply to ElionaZale [2008-01-15 13:32:00 +0000 UTC]

Lol thanks!! I'm so glad you like the acrylics. I agree that everything pops out a bit more which is why I wanted to try acrylics in the first place. Since I started out as a digital artist, acrylics feel a little more suited to my style. But I'll probably keep using both! We'll see. Thanks again!

Earthmagic [2008-01-12 16:10:06 +0000 UTC]

I love both paintings. I admit I am found of your watercolor because you creat things in watercolor that are very different for that medium. I think the two different mediums give a very different feel and maybe that should be how you decide which medium to use. How do you want the picture to feel? I hope that wasn't too confusing!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aurella In reply to Earthmagic [2008-01-15 13:33:19 +0000 UTC]

That wasn't confusing at all, and was actually really great advice!! I agree that they both evoke different feelings and I should take that into consideration when starting a painting. Thank you so much for the wonderful advice!
