Arcanum growled as his handler did up the last plait in his hair.
She chuckled to herself and patted the large stallion on the neck.
“Cheer up Arcy, you’ll enjoy yourself in the ring today!”
Arcanum rolled his eyes and sighed deeply.
This is the second event of the IHS Multi-Class show that Arcanum had been enrolled in, and his stomach was still churning after the last event’s happenings.
Arcanum shivered as he felt the breeze on his now bear neck.
“I don’t like this,” he thought, looking around at his surroundings.
There were many other horses waiting outside the arena getting themselves ready for their events. Much like Arcanum, the other horses had been washed, brushed and combed and their coats shone brightly in the warm sun.
Arcanum felt his handler’s hand tugging lightly on his tail, and he swished it away from her grasp, looking over at her and snorting, “I think my mane is quite enough.”
His handler raised her hands up playfully and shrugged her shoulders.
“Alright Arcy, no more plaiting, gotcha.”
Arcanum nodded his head and breathed deeply. He still felt pretty nervous, even though he was quite good at jumping.
Ever since Arcanum could remember he could jump. He was jumping small fences and the other foals when he was only young.
The stallion smiled to himself as he recalled his childhood.
Arcanum glanced over at his handler as she grabbed hold of his reins.
“Come on you,” she insisted, tugging on the reins. “We’ve got to get you in line.”
Arcanum didn’t resist and followed his handler into the large arena. Last time he was in here the arena had had a large stone circle in the middle, where horses had to wrestle one another outside the ring. Instead, there was a large rectangular enclosure in the middle, with 3 large looking jumps placed a long it.
“They’re the jumps I’ll have to jump over,” Arcanum thought, noticing that the last jump was quite high.
His handler led the stallion past many other ballators until she stopped him by the front of the gate that aloud entrance into the rectangular enclosure.
She tied Arcanum to the fence then left him there as she walked away.
“Great,” thought Arcanum, as he watched as the horse in front of him was led into the arena. “This will be a good show.”
The stallion was let go by it’s handler and was quick to canter towards the starting jump, which it jumped with ease. “Good,” Arcanum thought, watching as the stallion lifted it’s legs up high to clear the second jump. “That last one will be tricky.”
Arcanum watched closely as the stallion jumped, it soared over the jump, but it didn’t lift it’s hind legs high enough. Arcanum grimaced as the stallion’s back hooves knocked the top pole down with a loud clatter.
The stallion seemed to swear to itself before its handler grabbed hold of him again. As he was being led out, Arcanum lifted his head and called, “Bad luck kid, I’m sure you’ll do better next time.”
The stallion stopped walking and glared at Arcanum before replying, “I can’t wait to see you fail up there.” Arcanum watched the stallion walk out of view before muttering, “Sore loser.”
Arcanum then noticed that it was his turn up next. The stallion’s nerves picked up and his breathing quickened. He saw his handler come back to him and reached for his reins.
“Let’s go Arcy,” she called, leading him into the rectangular arena.
She must’ve noticed how nervous the ballator stallion was because as she unclipped the reins from his bridle she said soothingly, “Arcy, it doesn’t matter if you make a mistake. Just go out there and have some fun.”
She looked out at the jumps and added, “Just get it done Arcy... That’s all we ask of you.”
With one last pat and a smile, Arcanum’s handler left him there, and the stallion breathed in a deep breath.
“Get it done,” he repeated to himself as he trotted to the starting jump. Halfway there he sped up, breaking into a canter and then a gallop. He soared over the first jump with plenty of room to spare. As he landed on the other side he smiled to himself. “That wasn’t that bad. Now for the other two.”
As he galloped towards the next jump, which was considerably higher, Arcanum sped up a little more and pushed off a little harder with his hind legs, rewarding him with a clean clear over the second jump.
“Two down, one to go,” Arcanum thought to himself, his confidence rising.
Halfway to the last jump, Arcanum glanced over at the crowd of horses, and he saw the stallion that had gone out before him.
The stallion met his eye contact and smirked.
Arcanum’s confidence drained out of him as fast as the came.
“I can’t do this,” he thought, slowing down. He looked over again and saw his handler, who was jumping up and down and cheering him on. He noticed the smile on her face as she called out his name, spurring him on.
Arcanum faced the last jump, determination burning through every muscle in his body. “I can’t let her down,” the stallion thought, speeding up as he neared the obstacle.
He counted his strides as he grew nearer and nearer the jump.
“One, two, THREE!”
Arcanum pushed off the ground with all the strength he could give, and he flew over that last jump with plenty to spare. When he was halfway over the jump, he saw the stallion again, and this time Arcanum smirked as he landed with a huff on the other side.

He had almost forgotten that there was a crowd of people and horses that were cheering, clapping and neighing congrats to him, and he smiled.
“Why was I even worrying,” he thought as his handler ran over to him.
“You did great Arcy! I’m so proud of you!”
She re-clipped the reins to his bridle and led him through the gate and away from the jumps. All the while Arcanum was walking with a spring in his stride, his head held up high as he proudly walked away from the crowd.
“That was fun,” he thought. “I’ll do that again any day!”
