A character inspired by a dream!

In the dream, he was a kind, if distant mentor. He was mortally injured in a sacrifice he made to protect the worlds, and then we lay in an open field, the edges of the dream growing hazy. He laid his head down, and I with him…

And then I woke.

(Also, his name is pronounced will the same sound as "Al" in "Alphonse" and not "fall". IPA for those curious, kindly supplied by my friend: /fæl/ )

After a bit of pondering and discussion (particularly with WhimsiKitty ), I came up with some lore for his species!

I've decided that he'll be a sort of mentor to Arith .

Species: Ihser [EE-ser]

Colloquial titles (nickname/slang): Guardian, Guardian Spirit

Species Summary: Ihser have three phases of existence. With every phase of existence, they become more aware and individualistic, becoming closer to their ward but less enmeshed with the will of Nature.

The first phase - "wisps" - is only a vague existence that floats around places of high natural energy, in between the realm of reality and dreams. They seek beings that call for help, by the will of Nature, and take aspects of that soul and surrounding natural energies to become a full existence - only then do they actually become conscious. This is called "coalescence," and they become "wills." Nature bestows upon them knowledge and power, things they need to help.

The third evolution of their existence is possession - of something that belongs to nature. This gives them physical form. Usually, whoever they're protecting won't be fully aware of them until possession, and it only occurs under special circumstances. Sometimes, it happens all at once - coalescence and possession.

Their possessed form is also somewhere between physical and dream, and can cross between the two. If their body is destroyed, their power diminishes and they can only exist in the dream realm.

Location: For wisps - everywhere with high natural energy, between the realms of reality and dreams.

Ideal Environment: Anywhere their wards go. Their wisps are found in places of high natural energy.

Behaviour: They follow the will of Nature, protecting beings and things that Nature thinks deserves to be protected. To their wards, they could be a friend, a mentor, a sibling, a parent, a child, anything that best accomplishes their task. They are born/coalesce with all the knowledge they might need to help their ward.

Culture: Dedicated to their ward. Though, if their ward does something to truly get on nature's bad side (unlikely, given that they were chosen by nature's will in the first place), they would turn on their ward and "return them to nature."

Physical appearance: Most have a ghostly/ethereal appearance. Their wisps and wills have no physical form - only when they possess something do they have an appearance. It will reflect what they possessed, which is usually something that lacks individual will and belongs to nature - typically a corpse of wildlife, sometimes plantlife. Often, it will have aspects of both. If it possesses something humanoid, it usually loses its humanoid form.
Wisps and wills cannot be seen, except as a vague light in the realm of dreams.
