we were three
when we met them.
and I was one
when we met again.
they tried to help me
but memories could only give so much.
so when they told me what they could do
how they could change me
I accepted.
and now
I am remade
but one, I still remain.
— Story —
Rahat was once one of a small pack of three stray dogs, wandering the White Desert of Egypt. They were left there by humans — first Rahat, and then two twins younger than her that she met and decided to travel together with.
The twins passed before them, and Rahat carries that grief from their past life: the loss of two that they considered family. They wander their boundary of the White Desert, uncertain of what they wish to do, unsure of how to interact with others. Most days and nights, their mind is cast to their days as a dog, not wishing to go back, but unsure of how to move forward. When they come across the animals that have made their home in the desert, Rahat will sometimes play with them or guide them to the nearest source of food or water, or, if they are a bit lost, guiding them back to their den or other home.
They are a bit skittish around other esk, but that is mostly due to their uncertainty rather than fear of what might occur. Should one become close to them, they would find that Rahat is one that loves and feels deeply, with a kind, gentle, and almost motherly warmth. But at the moment, the pain is still so very encompassing.

The story of their transformation begins with Vahi. Vahi traveled to the White Desert one day, and what a surreal sight it was; the white of the limestone resembled the ice of the polar regions, yet here they were in the desert sands. They found a perch upon an eroded stone, and cast their gaze to the sky. Hours passed, time smearing in long exposure, captured in snapshots by their magic. The sun set, the moon rose, the stars came out. Vahi watched it all, unmoving.
Eventually, the moon dipped below the horizon as well. The desert was plunged into darkness, and it was there that they could gaze upon the Milky Way. How beautiful. How far. They copied the beautiful sight into their own body, mapping the stars of the celestial sphere in their own small form. Simulacra though it may be, they felt closer, then, to the heavens. As the sky began to brighten again, purples and lavenders tinting the scene, Vahi melted their blues to the same violet hues.
The silence was broken by the arrival of three stray dogs. Two were similar, with coats of black and brown, and with triangular ears; one had ears that lay upon the sides of their head, their coat a simple brown. Vahi whirred in surprise — it was an unexpected sight in the desolate desert. Even more unexpected was their approach. One of the "twins" remained at the foot of the rock, while two climbed up. The other twin stopped at the ledge below them, but the last leapt up to stand beside Vahi, investigating them without fear.
Vahi tilted their head at the creature, curious, and allowing the dog's own curiosity. It nosed at the strange watery surface that Vahi manifested upon the rock, snuffing in confusion as it looked at its reflection and tried to lap it up, only to gather the barest hint of water alongside the dry chalk beneath. It was unfortunate, Vahi thought; they could not offer much of the water they clearly craved from their power.
When it realized that Vahi's water surface was not a true source of water, they had expected it to leave. To their surprise, it simply sat down next to them, gazing towards the rising sun. Vahi watched as well, and let time slip by — until the dog beside them rose to its feet, gave them one more look, and leapt down, leading the other two dogs away.
Vahi took a moment to commit the experience to memory, recording it for posterity. And they thought that would be that, but — one day, later, they returned to the desert and met the leader of the dogs again. But it was alone, its eyes were sad, and its form was even more emaciated. They could feel it in the vibrations of their soul: it was lost.
It was not difficult to conclude what had occurred, and the realization saddened Vahi greatly. Vahi scattered glittering sparks of memory around them, bringing forth the memory of the dog's companions in vivid hallucinations. The dog crooned dolefully at the sight, stumbling weakly at the mirages of its dear companions.
But memories are all that they were, and the echoes were not enough to pull the dog from its despair. So Vahi stood before the dog and displayed a sequence of images in their tail. It was a depiction of a transformation by a different esk, showing the way the power enveloped the lost one, and how their shape changed.
Vahi told them without a single word: I can change you. Unbind you from life, and in turn, bind you to the Earth itself.
And the dog agreed. So Vahi stepped forward, glowing and glittering with power, and transformed them.
The esk that would become Rahat opened her eyes to a new state of existence. She felt so strangely light, unburdened by the weight of being alive. Her mind was clearer now, but that was a blessing as much as it was a curse, for the weight of grief lay heavy upon her shoulders.
She was grateful to Vahi for transforming her. But… she suddenly understood in stark clarity that while Vahi saved her from a lonely end, they did not save her from the crushing loneliness of losing her two dearest companions.
Vahi remained by her side for a time, the two wandering the desert in wordless conversations. Vahi made sure Rahat understood what she needed about esk — her boundary, the limits of her power, the nature of her being. But soon, they told her that they wished to travel again. They invited her to come, but she declined; leaving her boundary felt strange and alien, for now, and she still felt a strange attachment to the place that was her companions' grave, and what she thought would be hers.
So Vahi departed, though with the sentiment of, Let us meet again.
And Rahat turned back to the White Desert, wandering into the expanse of sand and limestone.
