Description Following some input from Lightrae [link] and African Observer [link] I've been back to extend the dynamic range in the highlights and improve the detail in the feathers.
Thanks to Ralph and Grant!

Take a look at this:- [link]
This girl is amazing!

Explanation, The canal where these herons fish, is fed from a river via a navigable tunnel, just before reaching the open air the water goes under a rail bridge and then a road bridge.

Daylight shines down between the bridges. The heron had followed a fish under the first bridge, and surprised by the sudden darkness was obliged to slow to an almost hover speed.

When he reached the narrow shaft of light between the two bridges he was lit like a dancer on stage surrounded by darkness, and I snapped the shutter.

The heron promptly dropped to the water taking his prey. Seconds later, he came out into the air, with the dripping fish in his beak. I kept shooting in repeat mode (see photos "In Flight Meal" and "Eye to Eye")

My goodness...
Took me three or four reads to build that complicated map in my head, but I think I get it now!
Great preparation on your part to be ready for the shots. Well done - its paid off in the images.

In fact I was expecting only to get the pale heron against a dark background, the shaft of light was an unplanned bonus! The AF on that long lens is painfully slow (a lot of glass to move), so there was a lot of luck in this shot!

Gary Player once said - 'the more I practise, the luckier I get'. Being ready to grab the luck is experience. Spotting the luck is talent. Having luck - that's just good fortune

I sometimes switch off the AF when things are far-ish away - maybe stop down a little for more DoF insurance.
