I painted this during a video call with my aunt and uncle out in Arizona. It initially was supposed to be my interpretation of the southwest landscape, but as I was painting, the composition kind of just created itself. I was planning on more brown and orange tones rather than purple, but when I put the lavender color in the sky, it sort of took over the painting. I wanted something on the left side that would be sort of in the background, and of course it ended up being an approaching thunderstorm. The dead tree on the right was added right at the end to balance and frame the mountain in the painting.
I'm actually very happy with this. I still need to work on the thickness of each layer of paint (and I'm still awful at signing the front of the paintings ) and the river could have had a little more going on with some moving water and rocks and splashing, so that's something to think about for next time.
As a whole it's better to put thicker paint on when applying a base for water, but I think it's probably easier to create reflections if your base layer is just a little bit wetter; again, something to consider next painting.
Also, the name was my uncle's idea; apparently the mountain looks like a foot and I'll be sending this to them once it dries.
