Description This was done for a woman named Andrea Klatt. She never got it though. Wish I could have given it to her though, though I guess it's pretty low quality. If I see Andrea again, I'll have to paint her something new.

Given to All Nations Youth Safe House in Jan 2009 instead.

To answer any questions that might arise:
- Why frogs? Frogs were one of Andrea's favourite animals apparently, or what she requested.
- No that is not blood it is paint
- It is the sun on the ground she painted, a sun ritual to celebrate a new day
- The frogs both have the sun painting on them too, they are from the "Sun Clan"
- The frogs are anthropomorphic too.
- The white/clear shit on the painting in the Gel Matte and Modeling Paste that PROMISED to come out clear but didn't.

Medium: Acrylics, Gel Matte and Modeling Paste on canvas board.
Time: 67 hours

did you ever tried to give white contour on the fur where the sun hits it to separate the character from the background especially when both character and background has similar colours?
it can help really a lot and give attention to the character more but also give chance for a nice and detailed background.
also, if you add little blueish colour to the distant trees it gives more 'depth' to the image showing that it is in the distant.

if you see from a balcony the hills you see they are going to blue from green if they are far, this can give great deepness of the art itself

I just went through your gallery and saw this piece, love a lot the idea and the softness in it and since you required critique I was thinking about to help a little what others told me long before too and it worked forme - hope I could help C:

Thanks so much for the critique! Usually I would go back and try to fix a piece when I get critique like this, but I donated it and can't do it anymore.

BUT! I am working on a piece with trees in the background right now so I will try adding a hint of blue to them. I would have never thought of it, so thanks for the tip

As for 'white countour' I'll be honest I don't know what you mean by that / what it is so I don't think I tried it. I feel that it would have looked fine if I did not add the gel matte to it though, it looked a lot better before that. But tell me more about what you mean, it may come handy for in the future.

Thanks for taking a look, glad you like it, and a good one to critique on too, as it's mildly new and needs the critique still haha.

Hey you are welcome really!
I don't think is that a big problem you can't fix this one anymore, you have many others chances to make it better next time
The blue works really well especially if the forest/wood itself surrounded with lots of tree and not too many chance that the light can hit through the leaves C:

Also if you make less sharper the colours n those parts which are behind or more far from the viewer it can help too! Or make the distant objects a bit more blurry while the front ones are sharp and strong coloured C:

With the white I apologise my english grammar I did not found the right word. I tried to say if you make some fur part with white or really light yellow how the light can hit the character but only those fur which is the character's "lineart" it can help separate the character from the background!
I try to show an example because words fail me;
[link]
like here the way I made the fur on her neck, those small little white parts, not so big touch but helps and separate the character also gives really nice contrast which is another nice touch to make the work more realistic C:
Hope now it is okay and you understand what I am trying to say with my poor english

Welcome really, I am really happy if I could help you wit this critique, an will be look for the other forest image you were talking about

Thanks for reply

For the lighting, I try to go for as much as possible optical colour though the art you see here doesn't reflect that... so, for example... [link] I wouldn't 'white contour' as you say the oxpecker but give it optical colour. Or [link] does not highlight eyes or fur in 'stand out' ways. The style you're showing me doesn't go for optical colour but irrealism... this piece I have here doesn't really have optical colour and the gel matte fucked it up so bad haha, and my newest piece doesn't use optical colour either so I can't really show you examples of my own that I've used it yet. But it's my aim and highlighting it like that would counteract my aim... [link] is another example.

Basically my aim isn't to 'separate' but make them one, the character is no more important than the background... I am trying (though, so far failing ) to make it realistic and usually animals don't have a white lighting to make them stand out, yeah? I know the image here looks flat and un-3D but I don't think a white outline would help?

Looking at "Starfinder" or "Ailah"'s work kind of show what I hope to achieve one day. But nonetheless I very much appreciate the suggestion, it is just not a style I will ever aim to use I think....

I will try the blue in the trees though, like I mentioned, with my upcoming works.... for that, is it just the trunks that would be blue-tinted or all around it as well?

Too bad Andrea couldn't get it

Very nice.

I don't critique good artists who don't work for me. And my preferences are of no importance...

My heart to you...we all have pain and grief and suffer confusion, but enough is enough for anyone. Emote...

It's just that, the first thing I evaluate is whether or not I like the styling and quality of a peice. If I don't, critiquing anything else becomes moot, especially if the style is sort of undefined or abstract. No point saying "That cube isn't cubish" if the work is a non-linear abstract. I simply prefer highly detailed illustrations which are heavy on relative realism, so anything else might be nice and appeal to me in some way - theme, colors, overall composition, subjects - but I really don't bother critiquing because I have a fairly instinctive eye for general proportions and conformation. So unless a subject's head is too big or the pose seems very unrealitic, I try not to pick on things.
