Description This picture I whipped up in three days straight when I heard it was one of my favouritest staffs' birthday coming up, Chrissy. This is of her dog Jude, except not really it's just a shitty reference picture sadly and I really wish I would stop doing these shitty kind of pictures. I mean it's still good, but I like the ones with no references better.

wow.. I have to agree that this is very nicely drawn. Although, I think its a bit pale.. More contrasts perhaps? ^^

wholba [2007-12-31 08:26:10 +0000 UTC]

lovely expression, nicely drawn.
critique: the eye is too small. all in all it's very pale; it lacks some deep shadows (the black portions should be really black). tip: use better paper and 4b and 8b pencils. the line which separates the upper side of the tongue from the palate is far too prominent.
nevertheless a fine drawing, keep it up!

Actually now that I look, his eye is a little small. Hm.

wholba In reply to Avalik [2007-12-31 09:09:22 +0000 UTC]

i haven't seen the ref, but i feel it's a tad too small.
but it may also been the case that it's correct (due to the perspective)...

Avalik In reply to wholba [2007-12-31 08:38:58 +0000 UTC]

I use Bristol paper. Better paper I think would be too expensive for me because Bristol is good quality -- or am I wrong. And this is pencil crayon, not pencil.

The proportions I believe are correct because it is the exact same as the photo (which the link I just checked isn't working i'll have to fix that) however deeper shadows I did try with all my might and the darn pencil crayon just wouldn't have it! I think a different brand of pencil crayon maybe. Do you know which one might come out darker next time?

wholba In reply to Avalik [2007-12-31 08:53:45 +0000 UTC]

bristol is a well known brand; they sell cheaper and better papers.... yes, you are right. the better, the more expensive.
what do you mean whith "crayon"? do you mean waxy sticks (no wooden case)? or that what we call in german "Buntstift" (looks like an ordinary pencil, but is available in all colors)? i think, this it is...
if it is so, your brand is too hard. especcially on smooth paper! try a paper with more "teeth".

Avalik In reply to wholba [2007-12-31 09:03:21 +0000 UTC]

I use Derwent and Prismacolour pencil crayon which would be your Buntstift on Bristol smooth, sometimes if I don't have the right colour I use Laurentien or Crayola.

wholba In reply to Avalik [2007-12-31 09:25:49 +0000 UTC]

ok. try a rough paper, you'll see that it takes far more color than the smooth one.

Refs = good proportions! Though I wish I didn't ref so heavily

kmaier99 In reply to Avalik [2007-12-31 08:14:55 +0000 UTC]

Why...if you are trying to draw realistically you have to look at something real...that holds even if the application is fantasy.
Only a super genius could very accurately draw something from memory. I can draw my Mom better than anyone else because she is like "the face"...the face I saw while i was an infant and nursing! The face I saw most of my life, more than anyone else. But I still have to have her sit for me or use a photo.
I am in art school and we are not allowed to draw from imagination until like...second or third year...
There is no shame in using a reference....now if you mean tracing...that is a different thing i guess. I always hated drawing aids like tracing or graphs...i am dense when it come to their use. But my sis is a muralist and uses them to enlarge things...and she can draw fine. But they can also become a crutch and one should learn to see the proportions.
All of that is my opinion and in the end you should do what you want. It is your art....and it obviously comes from your heart.
