Description The "Short-Bodied Goosefish," Caruso brachysomus (synonym=Lophius brachysomus), the earliest known goosefish, known only from Middle Eocene fossils from Monte Bolca.
C. brachysomus was very similar, if not identical to modern goosefish. Its tail was proportioned more shorter than those of modern goosefish, however.

The specimen shown in "Fossil Atlas: Fishes" is about 15 centimeters from mouth to tail.
