Description Reconstruction of the zignoichthyid Iraniplectus bakhtiari, from the Oligocene of Iran. Closely related to modern pufferfish and porcupinefish.

This little guy looks like he was a pain in the ass to draw.

I wonder if those plates were covered over with more skin?

I know they're not related but a pet store here frequently has small pinecone fish. I was amazed, somehow I was under the impression those were almost abyssal, I was totally incorrect.

I. bakhtiari was a pain to draw, comparable to labor pains kind of pain.
As far as I can tell from the paper describing it, the plates are derived from scales.

I think it's because pinecone fish are nocturnal and luminescent that you got the impression that they were abyssal, They're popular in aquaria, but, are very challenging to keep.
My aunt says that, in Taiwan, they're occasionally eaten (I assume poached), served with vinegar.
