Description Name: "Yellow Parrotpigeon"
Length: (40 cm)
Weight: up to 250 grams
Color: Yellow-orange, with red tail and wing feathers
Species: Onycolumba gregarius
Classification: XII (Alien species)
Population: 5 billion
The Yellow Parrotpigeon, Onycolumba gregarius (also known by its synonyms Deinodidunculus gregarius and Microraphus sanguineas), is found throughout the coastlines of Microthalassa. The species gathers together in a single "super-flock" that comprises of around 5 billion individuals. The super-flock migrates counter-clockwise around Microthalassa, in an irregular fashion, descending upon forest or marshland, and leaving once all edible vegetable matter has been stripped away. Particularly warm years will see the super-flock migrate northwards, into the grasslands and forests of eastern North Iapetus.

Individuals use their hooked beaks to shear away leaves, tear off bark, and peel open fruits. Parrotpigeons fear no vegetation, and are capable of stomaching even the most toxic leaves. They also feed on any insects they can catch, and eagerly flock to carrion, in order to get at bones to increase their calcium intake.

Yellow parrotpigeons are unusually melodious for a lactocolumbid, sounding not unlike a manic flute-player. The sound of a gathering is said to sound "not unlike a (Terran) death metal concert consisting solely of piccolos."

Al of the parrotpigeons fare poorly in captivity, O. gregarius in particular. They are all keenly social animals, and will wither away in captivity if separated from their groups for more than a few days.

I'm trying to imagine this superflock of manic piccoloists... The image of five billion mad flautists with bright yellow plumage is almost more than my mind can handle. Almost. Unfortunately, I do have the capacity and the sight and sound is... exotic. Indeed.

The birds in this image look great, but I like this one as much for your colorful description as for the birds themselves.

Let's just say that this is a homage to the Passenger Pigeon...

The blurry background really works. Makes it feel more like a photo.

Thanks.
I reused the original background, even.
