Description Reconstruction of the Late Cambrian "swallow-stone" trilobite, Neodrepanura premesnili, of the Kushan Formation in China.  Fossils of its butterfly-shaped hyponome suggest N. premesnili was carnivorous.

Kinda funny how I'm used to seeing trilobites all my life, but never in my life did I ever think about what they eat.

How do they figure out if a trilobite is a carnivore or a scum-sucker?

Its fossils show a large hypostome, a plate on the ventral side of the animal that corresponds to where the mouth used to be.  The size of the hypostome gives researchers a good estimate of what size particles the hypostome's owner could stuff into its mouth.
