Description PART 7

EST. WEDDING SHIP

(On the upper deck of the ship, the wedding ceremony is beginning. The minister, an extremely elderly gentleman, is standing at a podium at the front of the ship. There’s a great deal of pomp & circumstance. Some buglers blow a FANFARE & everyone quiets down. A group of musicians begin a variation of a wedding march.)

(Vanessa, looking resplendent in a beautiful wedding dress, starts down the aisle. Eric follows, dressed to the hilt, still with a SLIGHTLY DAZED look on his face. Grimsby, Eric’s best man, walks behind him. Eric & Vanessa take their place in front of the podium.)

MINISTER: (speaking very slowly & deliberately) Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today…

EXT. ARIEL & FLOUNDER ON WATER’S SURFACE

(Ariel is grasping on to the barrel as Flounder pulls. The wedding ship looms in the distance. Even though Flounder is flapping his fins like mad, the barrel is barely creeping along. He begins to tire out.)

FLOUNDER: (out of breath) I… I can’t do it. This… barrel’s too heavy.

(Ariel notices GLUT’S SHARK FIN emerging on the surface of the water. He’s running on a parallel track with them, closing in fast. She tries to get Flounder’s attention, but can’t make a sound. She then YANKS hard on the rope, turning Flounder’s head. Flounder turns & sees Glut looming out of the water, mouth open wide, charging right toward him!)

FLOUNDER: SHAAAAAARK!!!!!

(Flounder does a wild take as Glut SLAMS into them. Ariel is knocked off the barrel, flailing in the water. Flounder escapes to the water in complete horror. Ariel is desperately clutching the barrel while Glut, mouth open hungrily, moves in for the kill.)

FLOUNDER: Ariel! Oh, no!

(Flounder knows he has to do something. Then he gets an idea. He takes a big gulp & summons all his courage. As Glut closes in on Ariel, Flounder suddenly shoots out of the water right in front of the shark’s face, waving his fins & sticking out his tongue. Glut frowns angrily, turns away from Ariel & starts CHASING Flounder. Flounder lures Glut through the loop of rope to the barrel. Glut is lassoed by the rope. Flounder tears off after the ship. Glut pursues Flounder, dragging Ariel along the water in the process.)

FLOUNDER: Don’t worry, Ariel! We’re-we’re gonna make it!

Stylistically what I like best here is the underwater effects: This is the extensive look at above and below water at the same time, as always it suits the visceral quality of your style here. Admittedly, the stuff with Glut has always been one of my least favorite dramatic aspects of the original ending as a matter of writing, so this panel isn't the most exciting to me.

I'd love to get a look at how you envision the wedding ship and the wedding couple at the moment of Vanessa's (apparent) triumph, but I suppose that at least some of that is coming.

I wasn't too sure if the "see-through view of the water from above" would look good or not.

It's a little cartoonish, but that works with what you're doing.

Also, the purpose of Glut's return was to round out Flounder's character arc of him becoming braver and no longer a guppy ('cause aside from remaining a best friend to Ariel, he still sort of remains a coward. This would've ). I know not EVERY character in a movie needs a specific arc or one that needs to be completed and I don't know if Glut was supposed to make a second appearance somewhere in the middle of the movie to make a rule of 3 (first 2 times he runs away, 3rd time he wins), but it could've made sense. I remember reading a Disney comic book once and it showed how Flounder got the Eric statue to Ariel's grotto. (he knows Ariel's in love with Eric, finds the statue at the ocean floor, decides to take it to her grotto, Glut finds him, some chase happens where Glut manages to "carry" the statue, Flounder finds mission accomplished, goes to tell Ariel near the end of Under the Sea)
