Description My friend's Hindu and so, for Diwali, she wrapped herself up in a gorgeous sari and trudged down to the school to teach the 2nd graders about the holiday. I knew she was going to do it, and I happen to know she's a FANTASTIC cook. I am NOT a fantastic cook. So I made the above anklet to go with her beautiful sari, thus obligating her to invite me to come help out with the festivities in the classroom. Yes, the samosas ARE that good!

Was it hard to make?

It's lovely! And you already know I'm jealous that you get to join in on all those occasions, Holi, Diwali etc.
I'd love to see the sari, I bet it did look beautiful!!

Does self-inflicted harm count? 'Cause I stabbed myself but good on this one; wasn't paying attention and one of the beads was being stubborn...I thought to force it, and it got revenge!

sorry about the perforation, Kari. - [link]

i remember decades ago having to wiggle a very sharp
pruning knife back and forth to free it from my thumb
knuckle.

serendipity! [with epiphany attached]. yesterday, during
a physical, i asked my doctor about a hard lump on my
left hand. he said it was a harmless bone spur. it has
started to interfere a bit, but is nothing i can't live
with, [along with various other inconveniences].

just now, i realized that spur has developed in the exact
spot where i stabbed myself so long ago. full circle...

it's probably been growing all these years, now being
about the size of a tic-tac. in the intervening time
i had occasionally noticed a small lump there. now,
every day, i have to take a couple of minutes to force
my thumb to full motion. it hurts, but not too much.

the doc says i look younger. after working for 57 years,
retirement is like heaven!

pip

Oh, now I see. These "gifts" are investments and part of a devious tangle of plotting, tactical debt and social engineering designed to reap benefits at some unspecified point in time down the line.

I'm implicated in this web already, aren't I? My soul has been bought with beads and trinkets! What sort of insidious debts have I unknowingly accumulated here? What deeds do your deadly gifts oblige me to perform? How do I weasel out of it?

Yes, of course! Although I think in your case it may be payment for services rendered...

I'm off to go give blood. There's a drive tomorrow, CJ's call, but I can't do tomorrow, where there'll be a bunch of 'em sitting around chitchatting and having fun...I'll be on my own with the iPad. Oh, yay...

If you hear a large THUMP, well, you'll know what it is...

Services rendered? I don't render services, I secrete them. It happens regardless of payment, in much the same way a drunken friend sharing a taxi with you will throw up in your lap whether or not you encourage it.

Speaking of which, the trick with giving blood is to work up a load in advance that you can part with without problems. Then butt it all into your arm. Like a balloon. You'll be walking lopsided all day, but it's worth it.

If anyone asks, just say you're the Red Hulk.

Diwali is a Hindu holiday; it's the festival of lights, celebrating the continuous defeat of evil by good forces. It involves bright colors, good food, and, well, LIGHTS!
