i wonder what exactly they are looking for. For enlightenment is a word that is open for enterpretation, and that changes from person to person.
i would like to talk with them, to bad my mandarin sux, or i would have a lot better chance to understand their goal.

There is no need to assume that "material" things automatically reduces the purity of a monks path. That's up to the monk himself what these things do to his state of mind.

absolutely not, many Tibetan monks wine and dine in the finer things, for instance when I went to this temple the head lama had just left on vacation to hong kong, a couple of monks were listening to mp3 players during their prayers, a few have a motorcycle or car, and just about all of them have mobile phones.
