Description I decided to revisit Team Fortress 2 for a 3D model I could turn into a papercraft template, remembering how well the Pyro turned out. This time it's the Soldier, the rocket slinging war addict and one of the few classes I got any good at during my time with the game.

TF2 continues to surprise me with Valve's commitment to updates and brave balance changes for something so well established and getting on in years. Valve don't seem to be in interested in making actual games anymore but it's nice they still care for some of their older hits.

This is a papercraft template which you can download and print to build your own version! By default he is RED, but BLU textures are provided should you wish to swap teams. Credit and thanks is given to the TF2 Texture Improvement Project for some high res body textures to replace some blurry originals:  tf2tip.maxofs2d.net/

Included is the Rocket Launcher, a rocket and the shovel. There's a Stout Shako as a bonus hat because I have a soft spot for it, being the first hat I ever traded for when it was first released (at a ludicrous price I must add).

Additional info within the download file and on PDO/PDF #1. Any other questions, feel free to ask here.

Retrospective: Just a little bit of a rushed project in terms of my own build. Template's fine though!

-------Read Before Downloading-------

It's a 37.7MB RAR file which contains PDFs and PDOs to print from or use as references. ~42cm tall, 25 pages and 195 pieces including the Rocket Launcher, extras and hats.

You can open the RAR archive with software such as WinRAR, Alzip, 7Zip. Just search around!

You can open the PDO files with Pepakura Viewer downloadable free here: www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en…

Please do use this as it's immensely helpful as a resource and will show you exactly where parts go. It doesn't work on Macs unfortunately though.

Difficulty: 8/10 (Large pieces generally, some fine parts on the face)

Happy building!

Hi, in the downloadable file there's a set of PDF files with lines added. Or if you open the PDO files with Pepakura Viewer (free to download), the lines are on by default for reference purposes and you can use the "Set material to faces" button to turn the textures off, so you just have white pieces. (not sure why you'd want that though?)

How did you turn 3d models in to papercraft templates?

You take the 3D model and edit and simplify it so it has a shape that can be built out of paper, i.e. removing intersecting parts and unnecessary detail. Then using Pepakura Designer, unfold the model into a template.

That's a quick overview but it's easier said than done.

This is best thing. Once I have this, BLU demo and medic, along with a RED scout, heavy and engineer, I will begin the process of building an entire robot army.

Hi, I used 160gsm (grams per square metre) matte paper for most of this model, with a small amount of 200gsm for the helmet.

okay, thank you btw, last question, can i use less gsm paper ? like 108 gsm ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Avrin-ART In reply to zhizhen24 [2014-12-21 15:31:43 +0000 UTC]

108gsm would be ok for the head but everything else would either need something thicker, or a lot of extra reinforcement.

Woah, looks fantastic!  Will you be designing a Doc papercraft too?

Avrin-ART In reply to iloveportal1852 [2014-12-20 16:01:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! A Medic could be a possibility, as these 3D models are much easier to work with.

(I don't know how I would do his glasses though. Wire?).

iloveportal1852 In reply to Avrin-ART [2014-12-21 00:50:21 +0000 UTC]

Since his glasses do have some thickness, I think it's still possible to make them out of paper. Wire would be hard to bend at that tiny size

Avrin-ART In reply to iloveportal1852 [2014-12-21 13:14:43 +0000 UTC]

It depends how thin parts of the frame would be. Even with thick paper they could become very flimsy. It's something to look into anyhow

iloveportal1852 In reply to Avrin-ART [2014-12-21 17:29:04 +0000 UTC]

Definitely! But in that case, a few coats of white glue might help to strengthen it while maintaining the colour. Anyhow, congrats on the Soldier model!

Also, just wondering, but have you seen the movie V for Vendetta?

Avrin-ART In reply to iloveportal1852 [2014-12-21 21:05:01 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! And no I haven't- it's one of those films I've never gotten around to seeing...

iloveportal1852 In reply to Avrin-ART [2014-12-23 20:59:33 +0000 UTC]

You should definitely see it! It's now one of my favourite films of all time(and I regret not seeing it sooner)! Take some time out of your daily life to sit down and have a little break. (You'll get the reference when you watch it)

Also, I think I might try building Mordin as my next project!  So excited~
