Description Usually I wouldn't post papercraft projects here but on my blog or Nintendo Papercraft instead. However this is clearly not Nintendo related and doesn't fit the theme of my blog either, so here it is on dA for a bit of promotion.

This is a papercraft template of Tali in her Mass Effect 2 appearance. Print the files and you can build your own version.

Retrospective: An old favourite, despite looking quite blocky now. Makes a good starter model and is quite accessible to newer builders.

-------Read Before Downloading-------

It's a 37MB RAR file which contains PDFs and PDOs to print from or use as references. 12 pages, 132 pieces (I think!) in total. She comes in 2 colour schemes and stands ~45cm tall.

You can open the RAR archive with software such as WinRAR, Alzip, 7Zip. Just search around!

You can open the PDO files with Pepakura Viewer downloadable free here: www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en…

Please do use this as it's immensely helpful as a resource and will show you exactly where parts go. It doesn't work on Macs unfortunately though.

Difficulty: 8.75/10 (Complex but not so bad with experience)

Tnx for sharing and for the excellent descriptions. It helped me alot through that first project. I wanted to make Legion first, but Daishihun recommended to do Tali first - which was wise .

And now I have already finished the model.

Unfortunalty she doesn't stand alone :/
I seem to have done something wrong with the positioning of the legs. Guess it was the crotch: it seemed there wasn't enough space for the left leg so I ähhhh improvised...

What kind of printer do you use? Overall your colour looks better and without any damage. I used a laserprinter and lose some colour here and there. Not while folding (I scratched the edges first) but sometimes when I had pressed the glued parts together.

Avrin-ART In reply to Isildra [2014-11-25 00:45:55 +0000 UTC]

And thank you for the compliments and for building!

Tali's legs are in a stepping position so it's not that stable by default. But yes joining legs together is always a difficult part, especially the way the front 'skirt' gets in the way. In, uh that whole area try to make sure the parts are carefully curved around so the tabs meet their specific edges as neatly as possible. I sometimes find the legs move apart when building, so I take a long strip of paper, fold it into a U shape and glue it inside the model, so it wraps tightly up one leg, up and over down into the other to hold them closer through tension of the paper.

Mine was printed on an Epsom P50 inkjet (back when it used to work ). My models have somewhat poor colours in real life, they look brighter here because of the camera flash. It wasn't until I got a Brother printer this year that I could get some nice saturation, but apart from my BioShock SMG and 3DS Sheik I don't have any big figures to demonstrate the difference with...yet. Anyway, yes laser printers can have issues with cracking or peeling ink, or toner rather. So really an inkjet is the best choice in the long term if you are going to take up the hobby.

Yep paper , although about double the thickness of normal printer stuff, so the model's pretty sturdy!

This model of Tali is really amazing! I admire you
It will be my 1st papercraft experience and a great joy for me as a ME-fan

By the way, what kind of paper did you use? 120-200 grm, got that, but what format? Just common A4?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Avrin-ART In reply to Maldrad [2013-02-05 22:52:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot! And good luck, if you have any questions just ask!

Yes anything between that range should be suitable; personally I use 160gsm paper as it's a good balance between strength and flexibility. 120gsm gets flimsy but some people work fine with it, whilst 200gsm makes very solid models but with very thick edges between parts. All my templates are in A4 size by default.

Thx for an answer! I'm going to begin today, finally found a friend with colour laser printer to make templates with better water resistance, just to be on the safe side
Okay, I won't hesitate to ask questions if come across some difficulties!

Excelent work ! can you tell me what kind of glue do you work with ? solid paper stick glue or liquid ( drops or something)?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Avrin-ART In reply to Sengrath [2012-10-02 16:06:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, I use pretty ordinary PVA glue for everything- cheap and effective! Avoid solid glue sticks though. I know they're meant for paper but for models they have very little sticking power.

I'm going to start making Tali, but I just wanted to know if you could use Glue Guns? I really don't want to mess her up.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Avrin-ART In reply to Alieny1 [2012-08-02 12:44:15 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps, might be a bit of overkill though. I don't know tbh- I've never actually used them for crafts or well...ever.

Regular PVA or other white crafting glues work really well, you don't need anything fancy.

Metmann [2012-07-19 14:16:56 +0000 UTC]

Ive started yesterday and im a bit unsure, so im asking: what sort of gtlue do you use? cause a regular glue stick doesnt work too well...
Your papercrafts are amazing, have you thought about making one of javik the prothean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Avrin-ART In reply to Metmann [2012-07-19 15:32:47 +0000 UTC]

Yes glue sticks should be avoided. I know they're meant for paper, but the sticking power is low and more suited to school posters and scrapbooks than papercrafts!

I use ordinary PVA glue, which is cheap and you don't even need to use much per tab if it's fairly thick.

Yeah I actually have Javik and his particle rifle's 3D model to edit so he's probably who I'll do next (time/life permitting). These things take a while though so it could be a couple of months before anything is completed.

I have started building this last week, and I only have her right arm and head left to finish! And do you think the gun from Mordin's papercraft would look good with Tali? I was thinking of glueing it on her right arm.

And I must say, your instructions and PDO files were really useful. I was once working on a much simpler papercraft but it took me weeks to do it because I had no instructions, and I am working on this one really faster. The only part with whom I had problems were fingers.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Avrin-ART In reply to tomoraider [2012-07-15 15:27:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot for building the model! I'm glad to hear the instructions helped too since they often feel strange to me reading them back after I've already built it. Yes fingers are a real pain! More so on Liara/Shep since they have 5 smaller ones!

Actually I built the Predator pistol way before Tali as a test. She was meant to hold it but I didn't think the hands were posed right. Oddly mine holds Liara's Tempest SMG better due to its flatter handle. If you want the pistol to fit better, try to stick the thumb on in a more 'open' position.

tomoraider In reply to Avrin-ART [2012-08-03 10:33:36 +0000 UTC]

Hey, I just wanted to say I finished making Tali! I had some problems with her hood, so it looks a bit ugly where you glue those two circular bits on the front. And her left hand is in a bit different position than it's supposed to be, but it actually even looks better now! And there are some parts that look a bit ugly due to the glue I used, but all in all, I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out. I still got the extras to add.

I'm not sure which model to do next, I can't choose between Garrus and Shepard. Which do you think is harder?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Avrin-ART In reply to tomoraider [2012-08-03 18:09:05 +0000 UTC]

Good to hear, I'd imagine problems like that might be reduced with practice, though admittedly the way I designed the hood to fit on is a bit risky.

Tough choice! I know I listed Garrus as slightly harder, but Shepard has more smaller details since I for some reason insisted on keeping a lot of fine edges on the armour. Garrus' head is definitely something to watch out for but he's got bigger pieces overall for everything else.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tomoraider In reply to Avrin-ART [2012-08-03 18:23:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Tali was my second papercraft, but you can basically say it's first since I did the other a year or two ago.
And yeah, when I was looking at Garrus' PDO files, most of the parts were pretty big. I'm pretty sure I'll do Garrus, but it looks a lot harder due to the fact that he has double more parts than Tali!

Did you use a laser printer or glossy paper? I've heard that the ink can sometimes crack on the surface of the paper with these. Other than that I don't know sorry.

Thanks for building!

I can't tell you how awed I am right now. Not only did you take the time to make this, you also made it readily available, and with instructions, too! I am so excited, I can't wait to take on this challenge! As soon as I complete her, I'll be sure to upload a pic to my dA page and link it to you!

When I get a bit more experienced with models as complex as these, I'd love to try making the other three, too!

Again, thank you so much for this! Your gift is inspiring!

Avrin-ART In reply to MonaMiyamoto [2012-01-04 17:40:58 +0000 UTC]

Great, I'm always interested to see other people's results with these templates!

Well among the people I talk to in the papercraft community it's sometimes considered a bit rude to make a model, show it off but not release it unless you have a good reason. I always try and release mine to the public if they're good enough, and believe instructions combined with the PDO file are the best ways for other people to figure it out. It's a shame that not many models come with instructions these days...

Tali is the 'easiest' of the 3 with an uncomplicated body apart from the 'skirt', though watch out for the helmet and putting the hood on. :S

Haha thanks, Tali is probably the easiest of the 4 (well except the hands and chin section of the helmet) though a little practice on something simpler first could be a good idea.

Thanks, if you ever build her I'd be interested in seeing a finished picture!

People have asked me about Legion before, and I think he would be difficult to edit into a form suitable for papercrafting. The hole blasted into him would present problems, but as my skills improve who knows?

TheCrazymason In reply to Avrin-ART [2011-08-11 13:13:05 +0000 UTC]

sure I'll show my finished picture or you . I'm using 150gsm photo paper, so its going to be shining lol.

Yeah I can tell it would be hard, I make this paper robot a long time a go (which you could make its arms and legs move)and that wasn't easy. Wrex or Grunt would be nice to see too .
