Description Ah, so we are back with the trolls again, but for the third time? When it comes to the Trolls franchise, the toys they were based on were selling like hot cakes, but for the movies however, I wouldn't say that they are great. Well, the first movie is okay, but the sequel World Tour I talked about three years ago is a downgrade by being average & containing big plagiarism story elements taken from other films. And now when the third film announces, that concerns me if it's gonna be worse, but I at least expected it to be in the middle. Is Band Together worse or exactly what I expected? Let's have a look.
This threequel takes place in Bergen Town where the couple from the first movie are getting married until Branch's brother shows up to tell him that one of his brothers got kidnapped by two singers that are using him as a singing spray since they suck at singing, so the main crew are going after the rest of the brothers to get together and save the one that is kidnapped. Yeah, honestly, the story isn't great, it is oversimplified and played straight without doing something interesting. At least it didn't copy other movies this time like from the sequel, but basically the story here is weaker than the first's. There isn't really much to talk about the story either, but it has drama...lots and lots of drama. Don't get me wrong, the drama in other movies do work, but in here, it has like so many dramas and so many random twists that made me become confused. The twist about Branch's brothers is fine because the movie starts with a backstory, but having a twist about Poppy's sister did make me question, and then the ending shows Branch's second boy band that made me say "Okay, they did it too far" because they overdid the twists.
The animation is unironically creative for the world of Trolls, everything is colorful and vibrant. In some new locations, they used pool noodles and other craft object which makes sense because the trolls are plastic toys. Much like the sequel, the expansion did very improve over the first. The looks for other civilians are unique too, the beach people are literally just Muppets that are made out of socks while the retro people are rubbery elastic action figures. Speaking of which, don't I notice that the villains look like they came from Ruby Gillman? I think it's just me, but their designs are very familiar.
As for the characters, they have great development, but their traits aren't good. Branch doesn't like facing the same problem that caused his brothers to tear apart. Poppy is just helpful and hyperactive. Tiny Diamond is just the comic relief. The boy band brothers are pretty cool despite treating Branch like an infant. The bergen couple are honestly pointless, especially when the movie wants to focus on them too. Viva is surprisingly my favorite character because of her high enthusiasm and her voice performance by Camila Cabello. Not to mention that the sister relationship of Poppy & Viva remind me so much of my uncle's wife and her sister Shannon & Jodi. As for the villains, there is the bossy sister and the advantaged brother, they are actually interesting, better than Queen Barb honestly. However, there is one thing that did make me overthink, the female rubber people do wear lipstick, but why does the male rubber people wear lipstick too? I especially noticed that on the brother character, why is he wearing lipstick too? Is he a femboy or something? I dunno, but I guess the animators wanna do something different this time even it made me overthink.
As for the songs, well, it's Trolls, what do you expect? Of course there would be licensed songs in it, and they are catchy as usual just like the previous titles.
Overall, I'd say that I was right the whole time, this is a mixed movie all along, which actually made me happy. It's been a while since I expected a movie to be what reaction I wanted my experience to be...okay, except The Super Mario Bros Movie, I expected that to be a big fat YES for me and it shows, but expecting a movie that is concerning but turned out to be exactly in the middle is a blessing, so now I know where to put the Trolls movies. The sequel is on the bottom, the threequel is in the middle, and finally the first is on the top, that makes perfect sense. However, despite me being happy about my positive expectations coming true, this movie is still a mixed bag and perhaps one of DreamWorks' weaker films. For my recommendation, if you don't like Trolls, then just don't watch it. But if you are a fan, then just watch it one time. The Trolls film franchise nowadays is starting to overstate it's welcome, but I don't blame it since they had a huge toy marketing. If they wanted to make a possible fourth film soon, then I'd say I shouldn't get my hopes up either because it's...just Trolls.
What can I say? It's just Trolls Band Together...it exists. What else is there to say?
