Description It was a sunny day today, so I took some photos of my new origami zergling design.

I liked the way the light plays on the texture of the stone surface here, so I thought I'd feature this one in particular. You can also see the model from some other angles: [link]

In this one the plates of the carapace down the back got tweaked a little accidentally so it sticks out above the tail. It's actually supposed to follow a smoother arc down to the tail. But it looks kind of cute this way, so oh well.

Instructions forthcoming. In the meantime, you can check out my origami hydralisk instructions: [link]

Hope you like it.

Ha, nice! What kind of paper did you use? And how many tries did it take you?

Thanks for sharing - I always enjoy seeing what people make from my designs!

Totally tried it out using your (super useful) video, though I got a little iffy on the back and upper arm-blades, particularly when flattening the bit on where you have to fold the back in and the upper arms get all wonky. Also think something is wrong with his neck... D:

BUT I'm trying again tomorrow in the hopes of refining him!

Oh, yeah, the video tutorial is up already - just forgot to mention it: [link]

Actual diagrams might take a bit longer... Like sometime in the summer, when it's sunny out.

And... I made the zergling tutorial video. This one is much slower, at an hour and a half. With narration.

Haha, thanks for the encouragement.

I just finished making a thirty-minute tutorial video for the hydralisk, which I've had some difficulty uploading but hopefully I can get it to work. If not, I'll try recording it again.

Once that works, I'll make a video for the zergling and then I'll think about making diagrams too.

Hehehe. So, was this design like yours?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

axcho In reply to derikvyreflame [2010-01-24 01:43:02 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's very similar as far as I can tell, though I used a different approach to finish off the limbs and such. My first attempts were more geometric, until I figured out how to use the same sort of style as my hydralisk without it looking weird...

I think we use the same points for the limbs, except possibly reversing the front and back legs. I use the top two points for the upper claws, the middle points for the front legs, and the lowest points for the back legs.

derikvyreflame In reply to axcho [2010-01-24 01:46:39 +0000 UTC]

AH, I see. I was thinking that because of legs needing power, and the fact that the claws were over the shoulders, that the legs would be better covering the arms. I made a prototype with the frontlegs in the middle, and it turned out okay. You can see it in mah gallery XD

axcho In reply to derikvyreflame [2010-01-24 01:54:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the legs are supposed to be farther apart than the arms, but I couldn't get the right look to it if I switched them like that.

derikvyreflame In reply to axcho [2010-01-24 01:56:02 +0000 UTC]

Ah okay. You never did say how you think mine turned out... XD

axcho In reply to derikvyreflame [2010-01-24 01:58:33 +0000 UTC]

Heh, I'll have to try it to compare. It's hard to see the full form with just a few photographs.

derikvyreflame In reply to axcho [2010-01-24 02:03:15 +0000 UTC]

Ah yea, tis true. You just gotta bend it around a bit to get the pose ya want. XD

By the way, what's a zergling?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

axcho In reply to brontosaurus [2010-01-19 23:13:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh, haha! I completely forget that not everyone knows what a zergling is...

A zergling is a creature from the computer game StarCraft. It's an alien that runs fast and is cheap to grow, so you make a lot of them and then swarm an enemy base with them. They don't last long though.
