Description "No more running, and no more waiting. Let's hit them where they live." ~ Commander Shepard

It's a 4000+ page view spectacular! A special thanks from me for all those who visited my page over the last 12 months!

I present to you my own attempt at digitally drawing Commander Shepard, from the BioWare/EA game Mass Effect 2. Drawn using Sketchbook Pro and a Wacom Intuos 4 graphics tablet (Medium), on a canvas of 30cm x 30cm.

The drawing process took me roughly seven days, with (I've forgotten how many) hours of work put into the drawing to achieve maximum likeness to the original source image the drawing is based upon. Many different techniques were used, including shading, blurring, smoothing, and individual layer opacity manipulation again!

This digital drawing consists of a staggering 1250 layers give or take. I tried to achieve maximum likeness in the drawing in terms of armour appearance and colour palette by taking reference from a piece of official promotional artwork produced for the release of the second Mass Effect, of which the primary image of Shepard is also based on. The background was drawn from scratch though, and is heavily influenced by the interior of the Collector ship and Base from the game itself, the likeness here was influenced by several screen shots from in game, showing these places and their organic/metallic scenery. The Normandy was drawn solely from using references to the SR1 from Mass Effect, and the colours and screens of the SR2 variant seen in Mass Effect 2. Finally, Collector Swarms were added to heighten the danger of the situation in which Shepard finds himself in the drawing. The swarm likeness was gained by playing a lot of Mass Effect 3 against the A.I collectors in multiplayer, and simply by re-playing Mass Effect 2 again.

The Suicide Mission from Mass Effect 2 as many already know is one of my all time favourite segments from any game to this date. The setting, the choices made, and in particular the fantastic soundtrack all combined to provide a fantastic end-game to one of the greatest videogames of this generation. I could tell you a fascinating story about what led me to draw this piece, but the text would go on forever! Simply know that in my main play through the Suicide Mission didn't go at all to plan, and that the Alliance Normandy SR2's memorial wall in Mass Effect 3 is running out of space...

I am very proud with the outcome of this piece, and continue valuing putting more time and effort into each drawing that I produce. Quality over quantity as they say. Of course that's not to say that there are no problems with it, as I can namely see a few still that stand out enough to be noticed. Fortunately however I have the multi-layer version still available, and can pick out the faults piece by piece and update with a newer version later if need be!

Thanks in advance for all favourites and comments!

There were a few times were I thought..."should I carry on?", but I managed to drown out the thought of throwing in the towel just long enough to end up creating one of my most in-depth digital drawings yet! And I couldn't be happier with the outcome! Thanks for taking the time to comment!

I like the collector in the background, and how creamy and rich the colours look. And kudos for putting Shep in a helmet, that gives us all more agency to imagine our own Shepard in the picture, making it a more inclusive picture for all of us fans to enjoy ^_^
Better then the official art .

Thank you my friend! I'm truly glad you like it, especially as you appear to be a fellow Mass Effect fan too!

Β

Indeed, I had the idea to draw the N7 breather helmet for that very reason, I was going to draw my character, but thought it'd be more relatable to have a generic Male Shepard there instead for that very reason of allowing others to believe that it is instead their character. After all, we've all been through the Suicide Mission at some time or another!

Β

Thanks for the in-depth comment about what you liked about it, and thanks for adding me to your watch list too! I'm happy to return the favour myself! Thanks again!

Ah, and that is awesome to hear! It's a great version that I had never heard of before until I started to draw this! I'm glad you liked it too! I personally think that the instrumental version is almost as good as the in-game score, it's really unique sounding yet still as familiar as you'd expect! A truly awesome orchestral song!

Awesome! I'd be very much interested in reading that! I love pretty much anything Mass Effect related, it's a great franchise with a lot of potential for great canon and non-canon storyline to be created! Is that on your profile per chance? I'll have to take a look in my spare time if so!

Also, your comment reminded me of my favourite character, Zaeed in Mass Effect 2, and his old tried and tested Assault Rifle which he tells you about between missions! That's was awesome!
