Then to begin, there are three ways to write japanese words; namely katakana, hiragana and kanji (although this last one has complicated ways of reading it)
Katakana is used for foreign words that are not japanese, usually.
Hiragana is the main japanese phonetic alphabet. Do you notice how when you watch some series and a very complicated Kanji pops out there are usually small japanese characters on top? (I forgot what it was called exactly) But, those are hiragana characters.
Kanji is very hard. It usually has two or three ways of reading it. There is also a specific way of writing it.
