Description The caption to this picture is, obviously, "Would you like my hat?" This is a rather old picture, like all my deviations - I haven't drawn anything since about 2003. I left it unfinished because I realized halfway through applying charcoal to the damn thing that I had no way to fix the charcoal on paper. To avoid a colossal mess, I scanned it quickly and put it away until better days, when I can afford some sort of fixative, but never ended up going back to work on it again.

Incidentally, it has come to my attention that a sad little person know in this neck of woods as ~oldgrumpywizard has made a crude copy of this deviation and is currently attempting to pass it off as their own. Nor am I the only one they'd done this to: ~DostoevskysMouse also had a picture stolen and copied. I imagine it must be difficult to be utterly without talent and yet burn with desire to "art"; however, plagiarism is hardly the answer. For one thing, you will almost certainly get found out, and then there will be no end of embarrassment for you.

For pastel pencils, hairspray usually works as a fixative, but I'm not sure if it works with charcoal. Try making a simple drawing with charcoal and using hairspray, just to be sure if it works or not.

Artsy tips aside, awesome job! I love how you drew the expression on his face.

I don't know what was wrong with me, that I didn't favorite this sooner.

When I got to this part in the Brick, for serious, I think my jaw was about to detach from my face. Absolutely the most awesome part of it.

Yep. Definitely my favorite part, too. (Although the part where he dresses up as a beggar was pretty cool too. The man certainly has flare.)

(That part was great, too! Took years off poor Valjean's life, there, and probably shocked the crap out of Javert, as well. (I can't remember if we got to see Javert's reaction to that, later? I plan on reading the book a second time soon (wow, was it only in March that I picked it up?), but he must have been "omg wat" (well, Javert's version of "omg wat", at any rate) at that meeting, too, hahaa.) The ridiculous amount of plot-handy coincidences that are in that book, I'm not sure if I overlook/accept them more because they're just presented very well, or because they are absolutely hilarious and/or awesome.)

Face: Priceless.
This is a loverly drawing in all aspects but one... the hat. It's just sort of strange looking. But overall, great work~

Yeah, I never really finished anything below the collar. I was really only interested in the head.

It could be because I'm reading a messed up translation of the book, but...

...where in the book is this? (I really want to know! It sounds awesome from the "it was my favourite scene" comments.)

First of all, THANKS SO MUCH for illustrating one of my favorite scenes from the book! And second... DAYUM this is so realistic! Your shading and your ability to capture all the sarcastic humor in his expression blow my mind!

Very nice! This part is hilarious...

And what do you mean, a charcoal affixative? I know charcoal tends to smear, but how do you keep it from doing that?
