Description There are those folks who like this sort of things- and I figured to share this before I went to bed. There are also those out there who don't realize that EV's have been around for well over 100 years, and this is oneΒ  from the most successful of the early EV manufacturers, Detroit Electric. This example uses 14 6V batteries, has a range of about 80 miles, and a top speed of about 20 MPH. They were favored by ladies in period due to the ease of operation, their quietness, and reliability. Doctors also liked them because they were reliable transportation for making house calls. Detroit Electric pretty much made their vehicles in this style for many years, ending production around 1941.

Ironically, many of these found new leases in life during WW2 when Gasoline rationing took effect.

Oh yeah, I know this car! It just shows, if the battery problem is ever solved, internal combustion engines are doomed!

I would think so. The problem is this- for driving around town, they're great! If I were to drive to my parents, only 60miles/100KM away, I'd need to recharge my vehicle to get home. When I got home, I'd prolly need to recharge it.

Then let's try a trip to a Band show in NWPA or to WV. I'd have to stop at least twice on the way to recharge and once when I arrived. Granted the Volt and the new BMW i8 and i3 have the range extending charger engines, which make it work.

My other problem- with my apartment, do I run an extension cord out my window to the car?

I think these issues will be eventually solved. It'll take some time, though.

Perhaps you could lobby the management to install a charging station for select apartments! Or just make a few dedicated charging stations. But yes, as much of an electric fan I am. I still have a simple gas powered car. ^_^

TESLA is building charging stations around the country. Β I was surprised (shocked?) to see one in the parking lot of a motel in Missoula, Montana.

Perhaps electric's time has come!

.ps I'll never own a Tesla! ^_^;

I don't think you have to have a Tesla to use the charger. Β

A lot of fragmentation in charging tech. Definitely check before you get your electric car! ^_^

An electric car makes no sense where I live. Β It's 85 miles just to run to what passes for a city to go shopping.

Electric cars are simpler than internal combustion by far. They're basically giant slot cars.

Weeeelll, all the complexity is in the battery! I hear there's a newΒ aluminium ion battery in the works that might be nice.

Right- charging speed, the battery lifespan, what to do once its done, efficiency, all are in the mix.
