Description This is a representative example of the motorcycles Indian built for the US military in 1941 and 1942.

The advent of the Jeep limited the usefulness of the motorcycle in military service, but Indian still built 42,000 motorcycles for the Allied war effort including spare parts.

The Indian BoD pressured the company to secure heavy war contracts, which in part hurt Indian in the long term because they lost contact with their dealer network during the war and didn't do enough R and D for the inevitable post-war cycles. Harley-Davidson deliberately limited wartime production and came out stronger for it post-war.
