Description Note the differences between the stock 1963 Corvette in my gallery and this vehicle. 1000 pounds lighter in addition to many other nifty things to make it go faster.

My wife bought me the Exoto model of 001 for father's day; they also produced 002, but the prices are a little crazy.

I had to look at pics of 001, when the Simeone procured this car, I thought that was the one they were obtaining at first.

My guess is 001 still has the 377 in it, unless Penske took his to TRACO and put a 427 inside like Wintersteen did. I know it exists, where, I have no clue. All 5 of the Grand Sports are out there.

My understanding is that Penske dropped the Traco 427 in 001 specifically for Sebring in 1966, which it would have won if it hadn't been involved in an altercation with a slower car. It was for this race that 001 got the full windscreen as well, I've seen a pic of it as delivered with the same short screen as 002. The model I have has this setup. I also have a 1:18 of the GT Class Winner driven by George Wintersteen & Ben Moore, I should try and take a picture of the two.

Wintersteen told me when I asked him there were 2 reasons for the switch- First, reliability. He only had one DNF in 002 in USRRC races, and you'll like where- at St. Jovite when a tire went down. The other reason is they wanted more weight in the front of the car because the front end lifted pretty badly at higher speeds. The weight helped keep the front end planted.

Now, for normal driving and autocross, Dad preferred the 327/350. The Corvette in that period was evidently a lot more nimble with that engine.

Yeah, the C2s are my favorite vettes and I've always preferred the 327 based one, although a 427 or 454 has a certain cachet That's the same reason 914 fours are typically better at autocross than the 914 sixes, especially the 3.0+ conversions. "It is amazing how may drivers, even at the Formula One Level, think that the brakes are for slowing the car down." - Mario Andretti
The model has the odd looking spoiler they added for Sebring, even with the big Travers & Coon 427 they dropped in, the car was still light in the front.

I think De Cadenet even got the front of 002 light when he drove it at a special demo event for charity. I heard the drive was rather spirited.

002 would have had the 377ci, so I suspect the weight distribution would have been more to the rear in any case. This pic shows the home made spoiler:
Gotta love the brake ducts on the GT car

002 came with the 377 but Wintersteen replaced it with a TRACO 427 before he raced it in the USRRC. Looking at the hood of 001 in that model, the hoods are identical, and the ones I've seen with the 377 have a lot of really crazy cooling vents put in them to keep that engine cool. The COPO car is fascinating. 001's also got a much, much larger chin spoiler than 002. To be truthful, the bigger the better. I think Alain De Cadenet got the front end light when he ran the car at a special Simeone event.

A toy car with somewhere around 500 horsepower.

In a straight line this car was evidently brutal. The problem was when high speeds lifted the front end and made the front tires close to leaving the ground. Many cars of that era had that issue.
