yeah the lighting would be super exagertaed, but the picture is already really dynamic so it works out..!

Thank you~
I really love dynamic poses and scenes, the only problem is they end up being pretty complicated in the end so they're difficult to finish let alone organize into a composition haha...

I guess you could say they're more like open-toed sandals than shoes, but still XD
I've been meaning to give him shoes for awhile
I just could never figure out a design that worked for it until now :'D

yeaaahhhh it's a bit hard to give someone with claws, SHOES.
not just because it's hard to draw but also because claws simply get in the way of shoes xD

Definitely, there's all kinds of physical limitations with that in general
I mean, I suppose you could always just design the feet to be normal enough to fit in a regular shoe but that's boring
This is more interesting
Mostly because it's fun to try to come up with creative solutions to physical limitations

haha... it was a bit difficult trying to create a pseudo lighting that looked like it somewhat made sense even if it's completely fake XD
I started and gave up halfway through and just stuck with "good enough"

As long as it looks somewhat believable for now that's ok XD
I'm pretty sure I'll come back and ask myself what I was thinking if I ever find time to study proper lighting though haha XD

No problem!
I should study proper lightning as well. It doesn't come up much in my drawings, but when it does I always struggle with it. XD

It's not a bad idea for sure, lighting is a pretty important component to art in general I think
I've never gotten the hang of it for traditional mediums
Especially with graphite and colored pencils, I feel like you'd have to plan out your lighting beforehand
... But I can't say I'm right about it because it's been more than 5 years since I last used a colored pencil for anything, so......
A friend of mine has been trying to beat into my head the concept of global illumination...
... But right now I'm still just trying to understand the basics of shape and form with the use of lighting and shading and I still can't wrap my head around the concepts properly
I mean... I thought art was pretty easy, but I feel like life has been bent on showing me just how little I actually know about anything lately
I feel like I'm totally hitting the limitation of how far my instincts are gonna take me in terms of skill by themselves, so if I don't study I probably won't be able to go much further at all T u T

I don't think you need to do too much more planning for lighting with colored pencils then with other mediums. You just put down the base colors like normal and then go over them the shading. Then again I am rather basic at lighting. I hardily do highlights. I didn't even know about global illumination before now, and man, it looks/sounds so tough. Would need extensive studying for me to figure it out.
Oh you have some great talent in art! I even think you are more advanced then I am. I need to do a lot of studying too, and to help I have been collecting misc tutorials from around DA for years now. I really need to use them more though. XD

Huh... tbh I've always seen colored pencils in a similar way to markers and watercolors
Global Illumination, from my understanding, is more of a 3D modeling concept, in terms of rendering more realistic lighting...
But because the concept is mimicking realistic lighting, that means that it reflects what lighting should be like in a real context
What they're trying to get me to learn how to do is understand how light is reflected and diffused, that shadows of an object will be illuminated by the light hitting surfaces behind them and being reflected back into it so they're not totally dark, or that when light enters a dark room and hits a surface, that surface will reflect a really dim amount of light into the rest of the room...
I still don't really get it though...
I've been trying to understand it but like, the concepts of light physics are just
what do I even...
Thank you~
To be fair though, I think I probably hit my ceiling a couple of years ago
Everything I've learned up to this point after that has been based off input and criticism from other people, albeit brutally honest people anyway...
Do this, try that, this one thing looks too dis-proportioned, lighting doesn't work like that, do that thing more like this... etc etc...
... I'd still like to meet a mentor to help me figure things out better though
Youtube is also a pretty good place for finding tutorials
sometimes it helps to hear things from a person who actually knows what they're doing XD
I'm pretty sure there are also a lot of artists here on dA who also specialize in doing work with colored pencils, you could always bug them for tips or study their work :'D

Colored Pencils are a bit more forgiving then markers and water colors, but it is a kinda similar process for doing the lighting.
Who would think you would need an understanding of light physics to get a handle of art? XD
A lot of my improvements have been me pushing myself through self study and asking others for tips. Not to many people have given me criticism yet. And looking for some more traditional tips would be great for me, but I also want to increase my skill with digital art as well considering how people prefer that for professionally sold art.

Now that I think about it though, you don't really need to understand the absolute physics behind the light, I think it's more appropriate to say that it just really helps to kinda have an idea what it's actually doing
Criticism is hard to come by, but even harder to come by a critic who will take in account your current level, abilities, and potential in an objective way without simply tearing everything apart, and on top of that give suggestions tailored to help you specifically
The average person isn't great at giving quality criticism paired with quality advice, and a lot of people don't actually know what to even say. I am not an exemption though, I know I'm bad at it too haha...
But at the same time, it really does help to have another person lend you their eyes and opinion as long as you know they're opinions align with your goals and interests
tbh I only have one person I trust for their eyes and objectivity. Most other times there are a lot of personal opinions mixed in rather than tips and tricks I could use to advance or improve...
For digital art, do you happen to have an idea of which software you want to use?

Yeah, very true.
Indeed, which is why I am kind of glad that I haven't had to many critics yet. The best critiques I have gotten has been some that I have asked for from a group moderator called AnthroArtistsUnite. They are really strict on what they let in and I asked what I needed to improve to get a drawing in. Currently I have a friend who isn't an artist, but is really familiar many elements of art that constantly gives me critiques and helps me make sure my drawings are in order. He is very picky about style choices though, preferring the more realistic stuff.
I used to use FireAlpaca, but looking to upgrade to Painttool Sai.

The elements of art are pretty important for sure, having someone who is familiar with them definitely helps a lot.
I keep making a lot of basic and fundamental mistakes as a result of never studying them for myself though...
and without understanding them, it makes tackling the principles of art much more difficult to do...
I'd save myself a lot more time and heartache if I could discern for myself whether a composition is good or bad with my own judgment, but I also lack enough fundamental knowledge and experience to make that call on my own which is slightly frustrating in itself haha...
Ohhh I've heard of FireAlpaca but I've never used it before
From my memory though, Paint Tool Sai is a fairly user-friendly software
Most of my experiences with it were pretty straight forward
There's also the Sai2 with has more features, but I never got a chance to try it out for myself so I don't know what it's like

I make a lot of mistakes as well. Mostly making long limb lengths wrong, which is what my friends usually helps me with.
I should check out out Sai2, if I am going to buy one of them might as well check them both out before deciding.

Ah, proportioning
I used to have a lot of major issues with that before too, I had it pointed out to me enough times that I started to see what I was supposed to be looking out for
I mean, mine's still not perfect but at least it's gotten to a point that it's not too jarring anymore haha...
I was looking over the website for SAI, from what it looks like SAI2 is still in development so it's currently available as a "technical preview"
If you go to the "development room" web page, it says you can unlock the features of SAI2 using the software licence you purchase for Version 1
You'd have to download two different licences if you want both versions though; one using the system ID from Version 1, and a second one using the system ID for SAI2
The system ID's you get can be found within the program itself under the options drop-down, but the instructions can be found on the website too on how to install them properly
If you just wanna try them out before buying the licence though, you can also freely download it from the website
It says there's a 31 day trial period for the first version at least.
After that, you wont be able to save or load any files with it, but you can get a feel for how the program looks and play around with it before making the decision whether to buy it or not
You can also download the technical preview, but you probably wont be able to save or load anything without the licence
My understanding of SAI2 though is that it's also offered as a 64bit version along with additional features like perspective and eclipse rulers, whereas Ver1 is only offered in 32bit
Unless you work in massive canvases though it probably wouldn't make much of a difference anyway
