Casting her as Ariel has to be one of the dumbest moves I've ever seen. Hiring for the sake of diversity has got to be one of the most irritating, insulting, and offensive things there is. I don't care if she's my race, she's not fucking Ariel. She can never BE Ariel. And this outrage could all be avoided if this was a completely different retelling of The Little Mermaid, and not a live action remake of the original cartoon movie.

funny thing is, search images of actual Greek art of the god Triton, dark skin and a red beard are common. This Aerial is actually MORE myth accurate.

If hallie bailey was this good looking, no one would would care. Though to be honest, Disney going the who diversity angle isn't working. Mostly because they trample on their fans, and they pull things out of thin air and basically tell everyone "love it, or you are a fat racist white male pig, who doesn't know good taste in anything."

considering the god Triton was actually very dark skinned, sometimes depicted with a red beard; and considering the original Disney's Little Mermaid only used the bare back bone of the Hans Christian Anderson story...and more recently turned The Snow Queen into Frozen which bares very little resemblance; it actually works for Disney to move more towards the mythical than the story.
and how exactly are they trampling on fans with diversity? the trampling is eyeroll live action that lacks the imagination and creativity of the animated works they are supposedly expanding on.

Are you perhaps referring to the vase paintings such as this? www.theoi.com/image/P10.9Trito…
Because I'm gonna burst a bubble for you, that doesn't mean the god was black, that was the style the people were colored, had nothing to do with skin color. Learn some factual history maybe.

It's true that a lot of people find the live action movies to be a bit tedious, since they're essentially the same stories as the original animated versions, barring some slight alterations. However, the diversity and woke culture is also apparent. The problem isn't diversity itself but how it feels largely done for woke points and how people who disagree (the ones who aren't being malicious among the critics) are being labeled as racists, sexists, etc. We've seen this with Star Wars.
The thing is, the Little Mermaid still derives from Hans Christian Anderson's story, as bare bones as it is. It also questions why the previous Disney princesses weren't also given changed actresses in the prior films.
My biggest concern is Halle Bailey's ability to carry the film as the main character. From what I've read, she hasn't done any major or lead roles by herself. She has a musical background and small acting roles in tv and a few movies, but nothing that has her in the forefront. I don't know if her lack of experience will negatively affect the film.

I did work for Disney years ago. Their casting had always been on point. Hallie will do Ariel justice.

It's the shadow of identity politics and the bad blood it has engendered in places it need not have. It's my opinion that well meaning people have been conned into believing that turning the tables on so-called oppressors will not just level the playing field, but clear it for them. In the process, those who would side with them are shouted down and turn a deaf ear.
I'm sure Halle Bailey will be awesome. Hopefully she knows how to chose her words wisely on Twitter.

King Triton,
and to be fair, the old movie's Triton looked nothing like the mythical Triton, who had very dark skin, a red beard...and also a pair of human legs sticking out of his fish body like some freaky fish dragon-man.
