Description When I came across this work: [link] I was inspired to draw this courageous girl from Hunger Games. I loved the movie and the posters are stunning and powerful. It was funny that my first reference was cropped and I was just puzzled as to what that thing in the front was. I thought it was flames.
Graphite, A4, drawing paper, 8-10 hours

Thank you! no charcoal though. I really don't know how people get graphite dark. it was so much hard pressing with 8h... no fun. i wanted to stay true to one medium. I see so many really dark ones with just graphite. it shouldn't be that hard!

Ok, It looked like charcoal it in some parts. Well that's a point I struggled with : real black with graphite. I tried several qualities and brands. The one that gave the best result are Tombow Mono 6B (maximum for that brand, a bit expensive and not easy to get "round the corner"), woodless Faber Castel 9B, Koh-I-Noor 1820/8B. But I'm afraid it's often a fight with paper to get it real black and uniform even with those. And of course it depends on the paper grain. Give it a try ... there are so many papers.
What I do sometimes is to start with a first layer let's say medium grey before getting it black. For exaample this piece of mine [link] was a nightmare as I chose a smooth surface. That way light parts are less greyish and more vivid, but dark parts are easier to get dark ... If I had to redraw it i would chose a more grainy paper
Hoping this can help ...

maybe because there was a bumpy surface underneath?))))thank you so much for all your advice. i will go to the art store and try to find those. I used drawing paper and found it a lot better than sketch or cartridge for graphite. and then all the shine from trying to get it dark... and some parts look darker than others in the scanner. I had to redo a few times as I didn't even see what scanner was seeing))). Heather Nova is beautiful! That's what puzzles me- so uniformly and evenly black! no lines. I'll try your tools and get back to you. Thanks again, so sweet of you!
