It is a Pentax WG-3 (I think its called)
it has this little ring of LEDs round the lens that works really good when shooting close ups

Bumblebees are the worst. they never sit still and if I manage to get a shot I can guarantee that they have turned their asses to the camera.

Commenting because of comment month for CRPhotography
The red eyes pop out enormously ( in multiple ways) in this photo. Wow! Great level of detail on the eyes and the hairs between the eyes. Wonderful contrast between the strong colour and the more subdued remainder of the photo.
For me, the sharp part might have extended a bit more to include the snout as well.
Looking again, I also see the very tiny reflections that I really like. Specifically those above its right (and our view left) eye.
I always wonder how people do these great macros. Do you stun the animals or kill them, or howcome the do not move?

Thanks for your extensive response, very much appreciated.
Remarkable that you can make such a close-up with a normal compact! My 'travel zoom' seems not to be able to focus very well from very close, though I should be able to put it at 0 cm of the object. I fully understand that you cannot go about adjusting many things, because the fly will be gone before you say 'click'!
So, early in the morning appears to be the best time for all photography, certainly also for landscapes (with some morning fog). What a pity that I really am an evening person.
I have heard that flies actually (only) see things that move. If you move very slowly, it might not see the movement. Another issue with smacking them is that they probably feel the air movement.
Keep making those great close-ups!
