Double Diamond had a dream that his parents never approved of, they were strict and callous. His older sister Octavia was the brunt for most of it. And she accepted it all as she molded herself to the perfect cello player they wanted. But he didnt want to go that way. He argued, he begged for them to accept him. And when they refused, they refused hard and threw him out of the house.
With nowhere to go, he simply wanted to vanish. And he took the train to wherever it would go. Which landed him in a small village under construction. A village that promises comfort and family, with only one small price.
He was the most loyal to Starlight Glimmer, because she was the only person who promised him something and never broke it. He was the most vulnerable and therfore the most obedient to Starlight, he rationalized everything that happened and was terrified of anyone of his friends in the village leaving, he then became a pawn of emotional manipulation to Starlight whenever anyone pony desired to leave.
Sugar Belle was sent to a orphanage when she was young, young enough to remember her parents, but old enough that noone wanted to adopt her. She essentially grew to becoming a cook for her orphanage. But when she turned 18 she was kicked out. Sugar Belle could never land a job or start a business. Until she got a job making food in a far off village. This village promised her care and family. And a chance to make desserts. She didnt undergo the sameness transition as fast as everyone else, but as she slowly grew accustomed to the love and acceptance her peers gave to her. She felt that the only way to truly integrate into the village was to remove her cutiemark.
Party Favor was never your go-to for parties, although he tried, he never made anyone laugh. The air in his parties was always awkward. This is because he was a awkward stallion. How does a stallion who is socially obtuse, stutters and can never look eye to eye supposed to make a pony laugh?
He was embarrassed of his cutie mark, hated the weird destiny bullshit that comes attached to it. And when Party found out he could redo his life? He accepted without a second to lose. It was only when it was gone he found value in what it was. But he was a insecure stallion, he didnt want to be the outlier and betray his new companions.
Indigo Nightlight had a bad break up, a REALLY bad breakup. So bad everyone in her neighborhood knew about it. It wasnt just the fact she yelled and screamed at him to leave. Or the fact she threw objects at his head. But it was the fact she never ever got over it.
How are you supposed to get over it when you find out your boyfriend cheated on you with your sister? Not only was the relationship tarnished, but the precious familial relationship aswell. Feeling like she had no where to go she followed the advice of a strange mare and left to a remote village where she can restart her life. She changed her name to Night Glider as the villagers helped her forget her past and start a new.
Cults will lure in emotional vulnerable people, people who lack many things from the pyramid of needs . They will go after those who feel disconnected from society and family. Who are unaccepted and lost. They prey on these vulnerabilities, slowly making you accept things that you’d otherwise wouldnt. And they make you afraid of disobeying as the punishment can be taking away things that they made you think was unconditional. (love, family, respect).
It may take years to amend the hurt and manipulation that Starlight afflicted to those villagers. But ironically, she probably helped many of those villagers realise the importance of their individual quirks and cutiemarks, helped them understand whats troubling them, and heal in ways that they otherwise wouldnt be able to. And in the horrible misdeeds Starlight did, a new village full of love and understanding sprouted out of it.

I'm a little disappointed these four didn't have that much screen time
If anyone is wondering, Double Diamond's parents are Jet Set and Upper Crust, his siblings are Octavia and Silverspoon. I'm going to do some something with them all later.
