You can often get henna powder at Indian/Middle Eastern grocery stores, or you can order it online. I've used Mumtaz Al-Aroosa henna and Jamila henna. Both give a good color, but I prefer Jamila because it's a finer powder, although it is more expensive. I order my henna from Henna Caravan , which is a wonderful site for all kinds of supplies and information. Another great site is The Henna Page , which has patterns and step-by-step instructions as well as information on henna history and traditions.
As for other supplies, most things you can get at your local grocery store like lemon juice, medical tape, toothpicks, q-tips, etc. As an applicator I use cones that I roll from mylar wrapping paper which you can get anywhere you buy wrapping paper. I like them because they don't make your hands cramp and you can cut the tips to whatever size you want.
I'm glad you've been warned about "black henna" The Henna Page has a ton of information on it here .
Good luck, and have fun!
