Description December 2003.

Me and my friends took a break from the city's urban chaos and embarked on a 3-day hike to Mount Talinis at Negros Oriental in the Philippines.

This photo was taken on the last day of our hike on our way down the mountain. We trekked 3 hours from our last camp and arrived at this beautiful site. This is the river that runs through the Kaipuhan (kah-eeh-pooh-han) sulfur vent of Mount Talinis. The two persons in the photos are my friends Chad and Grace. Take note of the dead and uprooted trees along the side of the sulfur river. The river has turned into a whitish, yellow-green because of its sulfur content. It kinda reminded us of Mordor when we got there.

The remarkable thing though, is that on the other side of the area where my two friends are sitting flows another river clear of the sulfur vent. And compared to the sulfuric river in the photo, this other river is crystal clear. These two rivers merge together not a few meters from where I am standing taking this photo.

It was a beautiful sight... quite refreshing for a weary group of exhausted hikers trudging down the mountain in the middle of a storm. We took in the sight, had our trail snacks and photos, got some quick rest, and continued on down the mountain's muddy trail for another 5 hours.

Gashes, thorns, cramps and aching muscles... on our hikes, it's always worth it. And this hike was definitely no exception. Being with Nature and the Great Outdoors; enjoying every breath of fresh air and taking in the beauty of the natural landscape has always been the common denominator among our group's members.

...This, is where we find peace... this, is our release.

i thought this was a 3d render for a background until i hit the fullview button it looks so unrealistic, fantastic!! and even though all the dead trees it's a beautiful sight....

thanks! hehe..

yeah well... i never really got a lot of shots for this particular site since my camera's batteries died on me right after i took this one. And yeah... it is a beautiful sight. We actually forgot that we were in the middle of a storm for quite a while there when we got to the place. ...It just had an eerie yet calm serenity to it... 'wish we could've stayed longer there but the storm just drastically changed our schedule for us. It'll be quite a long while before I get to go back there... hehehe...

...btw, cool new avatar!

nothing to thnx ^^

its just natural? cool, i never thought that; it looked like an mass of chemicals in the water that someone wants to destroy that isn't still funny, course its an interesting region but i can't say something about how far destruction will go, or if just an little building will set there and nothing more, althought your description don't let me hope

well... when you come to look at it, don't be sad because it's all natural. The scene, destructive as it may look like, is actually by the hand of nature. The sulfur vent has been present for such a long time already, it's a natural opening in the mountain. Mount Talinis is a hotbed for natural geothermal activity.... the sulfur vent is just a natural result.

Although, there are some issues being fought between environmentalists and the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) about the mountain's preservation since NAPOCOR is just itching to move in and clear the whole forest area out and build a geothermal plant in the middle of the mountain. Since Negros island's forest cover is already down to its last 20%, things are pretty tense over there right now.
