Description This old 727-30 has been in Faro since 2007 and was previously used by Jean-Pierre Bemba, a former vice president of the DRC. He fled the country in 2007 via Portugal and this 727-30 has been stuck there ever since. Jean-Pierra Bemba was later arrested in Belgium for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Totally agree with ~HerrDrayer's assessment on the 727. The feel of the engines when they revved up was out of the world. Even more so from the rear of the plane.

Despite the noise, the 727 is a wonderful jet with exceptional structural- and flight-related characteristics. Hope I am not making the 737s green with envy!

The 727 and 737 do have quite a bit in common actually. 60% of the original 737 structure and systems were identical to that of the 727.

Have had great memories of flying in the 727s over the years. In fact, 727 is a favourite jet of mine.

Too bad 727 operations in Europe have been severely limited due to the noise. Still, it is a great jet to fly in. Hope this one is still in use in some way.

I don't think it has flown since it landed in 2007.

Great shot of a great classic bird! Nice cessna for comparison, btw.

Thanks

The Cessna left a few minutes later.

I miss flying in 727's. More than any other airliner I've flown in, the 727's seemed to take off like fighter jets...down to the end of the runway, nose up, and shoot off into the sky like a rocket.

Never flown in one - they've become quite rare, let alone in pax configuration. Curiously, I've seen two this week though - this one and another one at London Stansted (also privately owned).

Hmmm, did they go out of vogue in Europe earlier? I remember riding in 727's stateside right up into the early 2000's. The pilots liked them better than the DC9's because they had a better power to weight ratio. I can only imagine what it's like to ride aboard one of those Russian-built planes with four tail engines...though I don't know how their thrust rating compared to American-built engines.

I think so yeah. And there weren't many in service in Europe to begin with. I also think 727 operations in Europe are severely limited these days because they're too noisy for most airports.

I'll give them that. The engines have a very low bypass ratio, and the center engine is not designed to accept a hushkit easily.
