The Tauric Chersonese (Χερσόνησος Ταυρική, Chersonesos Taurica) is a UNESCO world heritage site in Sevastopol (Crimea, Russia). The ancient city was founded in the 5th century BC by Dorian Greeks as a colonial settlement on the Heraclean Peninsula in south-western Crimea. The Chersonesus Taurica and its chora served as an important gateway to the north-eastern parts of the Greek trade influence, including the Crimea and the Scythian kingdom , and maintained its strategic role for almost two millennia.
