Description Probably wasn't the wisest idea, but decided to finish an earlier piece I had done for kicks in class a few months ago, with a simian creature in a metal suit underwater. Ended up going overboard a little, just glad to finally be moving on to other things. Looks like it'd make a good cover though.

Okay, at first I didn't notice this was underwater. Then I looked back up at it and wondered how I could have missed it: not only are there obvious bubbles, and the murky water was handled beautifully, but there were fish!
Fish! I love the way that you added them in. Silhouettes that don't detract from the overall image, but add in that minute detail that you see the second time.

It amazing what you do with paint. I love the textures and the murkiness of the water.
The only criticism I might have for this piece would be that perhaps a bit more depth could be added to the clear bit of water. It seems to be all of one color, and perhaps a very similar color over it could have added a bit more depth and not made it have seemed so empty. But that would be it.

I have one question though. Is that a hand?
Seriously, I think the pointy rock structures are actually the fingers on a hand every time I look at them (other than maybe the first time). The hand of a giant, curling up naturally to where it rusted(?) in place.

I absolutely love this piece.

Holy smokes, that does look like a hand...I hadn't planned on it, lol.

Thanks for the crit, I probably should have diluted the diver a bit to give it more of an underwater feel, but I didn't want to make him look oversized in comparison to the statue...all the same, would probably be an easy fix.

So the hand wasn't intentional?

Not really, no. I just wanted to put something a little more solid in the middleground. But now it's a hand whenever I look at it! XD Thanks a lot, lol

Wooow! I love how you painted the foreground red, and slowly eased into the foggy, unclear waters. The colouring is just gorgeous.

the composition behind the painting is beautiful, the two third dark/one light works really well, and i love how you've used the lighting to force the diver out as a shadow, and the craeture out as a highlight.

The use of turqouise instead of blue or green is also a great choice, as it means that there is still a lot of contrast with the red, without clashing so much as to take anything away from the rest of the image.

The creauture/corpse on the floor, in diagonal has an unresolved visual tension - if it was lying more horizontally, it would definitely seem dead, and more vertically would make it seem more monolithic.

Having it diagonally across the page suggests it is in the act of sitting up, which, coupled with the shadows and the red palette around it makes it very threatening.

This is an awesome piece of illustration.

Looks great mate.

Any background story around it ? Like, what's the robot on the bottom.

I don't generally make backstories for my stuff, actually... But I was thinking of the diver as exploring the sunken ruins of some predecessor civilization, given the rough similarity in head shape. Perhaps he might be trying to reactivate a slumbering monolith.
