Description Super Sculpey
unpainted
10"

sculpted this back in the summer of 2001, following the first day screening of Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes.....yeah I know what you're thinking........the movie sucked ass

but I really liked the character "General Thade", and I guess I liked him enough to make a sculpture.

This was only my 3rd attempt at a serious sculpture made from Super Sculpey........this was before I knew about any techniques such as heat gun usage or turpenoid, etc. Made with only my hands and the sharp end of my compass....which was the only tool I used back then. I think it turned out quite well considering that.

Unfortunately I don't....but that's probably for the better
since I'm not very good at painting.

That's a bummer, I would have liked to see the finished piece, still good though.

You actually liked the 2001 version of Planet of the Apes?
....I had my issues with it, but I agree General Thade was
awesome.....I guess that's why I had to sculpt him...haha
thanks for the comment!

I know what you mean about the compass point, that was my favourite tool for years. I eventually added more that were better suited but still no heat gun or turpeniod. Out of curiosity, how do you use a heat gun in the sculpting process? And would the turpeniod be used for smoothing?
Gorgeous work

yeah turpeniod (or 91% rubbing alcohol) is usually used for smoothing surfaces. That's how the professionals get those silky smooth surfaces.

the heat gun is usually used only for superficial detail (because you can't techniquely bake with it, unless of course your material is very thin, in which case then yes you can bake with it). It's useful for baking surface detail that you don't want ruined by your tools or fingers while you work on other areas......does that make sense?
feel free to ask if you have anymore questions, or if I wasn't clear

thanks for the compliment..

thanks...
Planet of the Apes is one of your favourite movies? Really???
I hope you're talking about the original movies, cause the Burton version was horrible......
but I guess I cant really argue since Im the one who made a sculpture based off of the Burton version....haha

Well, I've seen the original movie, but just one time because I don't have the dvd.I really like it, the story is great and the end is amazing but terriffying too. It's genial. But I like the Burton version too, although the atmosphere is different.

Awesome! All those little details are killer. Awesomely fantastic. The old planet of the apes movie is my moms all time favorite movies. She'll watch like all.. 50 of them strait through in one day. I can't even be in the same room because the music gives me heebiejeebies too much.

you know I've never seen the original Planet of the Apes.....I dont think I'll ever watch it cause I already know the ending. I hate when popular culture ruins a movie for me....

Has your mother seen the new version? I bet she hates it, right? Terrible movie....

Gah. My brain just exploded.

I don't know how you make these but they are really, really fantastic. The textures are amazing, and the details in the plating are really awesome.

I still want to own your Shonen Bat one.
