I don't usually go for scary stuff specifically, (not that I read a lot of fics anyway, just the big titles; I do want to read more though) but I've been able to scare myself by flexing my vivid imagination on certain scenes. Like trying to really envision the last half of Past Sins from Nyx's point of view. I was able to scare and make myself sad doing that.
