So, while I do think it is nice to comment on others and to receive comments yourself, I am annoyed when I read about someone complaining about how they don't get enough comments, or how they want people to comment before adding pictures to their favorites.Why?
If I'm adding it to my favorites, it means I like your picture enough to save and look at later. I am even providing you with an extra way for someone to venture into your gallery. I do comment sometimes, but most of the time I just hit the favorites button.

Faves are absolutely USELESS in helping me improve and change as an artist and it's an insult to pieces that I put WEEKS worth of effort into not to offer me DETAILED CRITICISM.
Faving things just takes you robotically clicking a button with no thought. Writing detailed comments takes time, thought, and EFFORT which is why comments are infinitely more valuable.
Granted, I know this may make me come across as pushy or a jerk, but if you're willing to disrespect everyone's art by not criticizing it (Unless they ASK specifically for NO criticism) then you need to get off of dA.
I HATE people who disrespect art that I put WEEKS and sometimes MONTHS worth of constant work into.
I know this may seem like overkill, but believe me I feel I have a good reason to do it.
Artists who can't accept criticism and don't criticize themselves are the kind that belong here even less, because without criticism you will never improve anywhere near as fast.
And I'm not talking about being an asshole, I mean detailed, CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.

Not everyone knows what to say in terms of the quality of your piece, and perhaps since people get really offended over criticism nowadays, it makes it less of a probability to get someone to actually critique your art unless you ask for it. But if you'd like, I'd be happy to give you some constructive criticism.Β

If you can't take criticism, but you don't criticize YOURSELF, then you are a bad artist.
If you can't take criticism, and you DO Criticize yourself, then you're fine.
And please do give me some! 
I get that doesn't mean they don't like it, but it comes across to me as just not caring about it, even if they DO like it, y'know?
Go into my folder and look at the "Best of AE94" folder. That's where the art I want criticism the most on (and put the most effort into) is put.

I know. bragging about not criticizing others' art in a construcive way just comes across as "I don't care about any of the art my friends make!"
It comes across as arrogent and short-sighted to me.
But I'm not mad at the user who created the stamp because I can see why people do it because they're lazy and don't want to put effort into decent comments.
But I myself am a very lazy person and the only time I fav something without commenting is if comments are disabled, the artist doesn't want criticism, or I already commented on it.

If you're wondering what my icon is, it's a scrapped Pokemon from the original games, Red and Green. Its name is Jaggu and not only have I drawn fanart of it, but you can find fanart and videos mentioning it online, so it's actually rather well known for a scrapped Pokemon.
Just look up "Pokemon Jaggu" in google and you'll see fanart of it. c:

Oh my god story of my life. "IF YOU FAV U MUST COMMENT!!!!" Look, I like having a lot of comments too, but that's just asking for "Cool" or "Nice art" or "Cute!" and while they're all nice, and I do appreciate those comments, that's not what you people were going for, were you? When someone favs your art think of it as a comment saying: "This is a great piece that I don't even need to put input on, and would love to look back on it later!" or something like that...

Complaining about people needing to comment if they fav is just petty and off putting. Be grateful for what you get, even a 100 comments with ''cute'' or ''amazing!'' won't make you happy. So quit bitching.

I appreciate favs, I think most people do but likewise, comments say a lot more (literally.)
I'm sorry, but people whoΒ fav and don't comment are just damn lazy, I mean why not comment? There isn't really any obvious reason (unless you're really shy or such then I understand...) If somebody works hard on a piece of art/writing or whatever, and they go to the trouble of uploading it for others enjoyment, the least people can do is leave a nice comment, it might make that persons day.
Endless favourite messages with no comments can be a little depressing. It isn't hard to just say something nice about their art if you appreciate it.

I am okay with people not commenting on my art. I am grateful they add my work to their favourites. 
Sometimes I fave and run because I have nothing to say or I think my comments might be too boring for them to read.Β Β English isn't my native language and I don't want other people to misunderstand me.Β I commented on some artists' works, I was surprised they said I wasn't genuine.

It's basically like a round of applause to me unless they add it to their worst collection, so I don't care if they won't comment and fave. But really if someone thinks my art is good enough to be in their favourites then I'd feel grateful.

If I'm honest, I'm grateful for every fav I get. Sure, comments are nice and give me encouragement sometimes, but, as you said, if someone likes my art enough to favourite, I am grateful. I didn't realise this was as big of an issue as it appears to be.Β

why? Because faving says literally NOTHING. you don't communicate, say what you like about it, say how I can improve or critique or anything. all you do is press a button and it's featured in another folder. Sometimes words are better than simple actions.
