Awesome Red Frame Build!  I believe you when you said 190+ hours in the video.  I'm in the process of a Red Frame build custom painted metallic blue, chrome silver, dark metallic gray and leaving the red base frame it's base color.  I'm using a combination of Tamiya acrylics and I'm disappointed with how easy the clear coat scratches when any of the frame parts touch.  I read where people had good results without using base primer but I'm kicking myself for not priming.  but think I may be able to salvage the work I've put into it if I can find a stronger better clear coat, what paints do you use and what do you suggest I try?

Sorry for this super late answer-- been super duper busy with building and contests, etc.  Thanks for the kind words.  You've probably already finished your Astray, but to answer your question for future reference...

I used to use Alclad clear colors over Alclad metallic paints--  but have since switched over to using clear colors by Gaia and Gunze (Mr. Color) over metallic paints by Gaia and Gunze.  This is usually sprayed on over a primer of Gaia gloss black (Pure Black).  This stuff looks great and once it sets up is pretty much bullet proof (I leave about a day or so to dry to be safe), so no worries of scratching.  Again, sorry for the late response, but I hope this helps in some way.

This is just about the most awesome Astray I have ever seen. You did an amazing job with this. Just... Wow.

Thanks! It's harder to see what I did with the metal texturing in the picture. I'll put up a close-up. Making the red areas have some texture to better stand out against the smooth white paint was an interesting exercise... lol

That would be really interesting... I do have to admit that I haven't really thought of weathering anything that isn't gray or white. How terribly small minded of me... But I am largely impressed with what you have done. Honestly, this is some of the best work I've seen.

Thanks again-- I really appreciate it. I posted another picture that hopefully better shows off what I was trying to do with the textures.

No problem! I really like what you have done. I'd like to try it sometime with my completed kits that I have. It's going to be an interesting experiance!

Awesome, I'm looking forward to seeing what you produce. With the metallic thing, the key is to never actually use metallic paints ("metallic red", etc.). Instead, do a base coat of chrome or silver or whatever and put a clear color over it (red, blue, whatever). Give it a shot and see what you think.

I've heard that around, and it's nice to know that that is the thing to do! However, what is your opinion about gold? I have the MG Unicorn, and his V fin (when open) is gold on the inside. I was curious if I could use this [link] without getting horrible results (I'm rather fond of the pale gold because I really don't like gold in most cases), or is the silver/chrome layer then a sort of yellow on top a better idea?

I prefer the silver/ chrome with yellow idea as it just really pops and will be pretty anime accurate. I have the paint you're linking to and while it looks good for what it is, you may not feel it looks good on the UC. The big thing with metallic paints like that gold is to try to airbrush them-- brush painting them never seems to do them justice. Hope this helps!

For the small size of this, I'll probably go with what you said about the chrome/silver and yellow combo. I got ~waitingtoolong an airbrush compressor/ spray kit thing (note my relative small terminology on the subject haha) for Christmas as well, so for future (MG Stike Freedom's frame, likely) kits I'll look into airbrushing that color. Thanks! It does help a lot. I appreciate it!

To paint it by hand, I recommend Model Master Chrome for the base silver, and Model Master Clear Yellow for the yellow top coat. There are other paints by Gunze, Gaia, etc., but they usually work better airbrushed. Model Master works well both ways, so it's good for painting by brush.

Thank you! I'll look into finding those when I have time to paint UC. I appreciate the help!
