I simulated a shallow depth-of-field like what you can get with a good camera lens. That gave it some more realism than usual.

I did the painting on one layer. Then I duplicated that layer and did a quite heavy gaussian blur on the duplicate. With a layer mask, I then hid or semi-hid the parts where I wanted focus or semi-focus.

Thank you! I faked a shallow DOF like what you can get with a good camera lens. That's a cheap trick to make it look lifelike.

Do you find that drawing/painting in profile is hard? Every time I do it in my daily studies, it's tough for me

Thank you! I think profil or straight front is ok but 3/4 view is the hardest. There is a lot of foreshortening that is hard to get just right.
