I used to do pixel art back with Paint as a kid, made some pretty amazing stuff. I only every used the square paint brush to do one pixel at a time.
I actually used a photoshop transparent black layer underneath my pixels so that I had a solid outline to fill in with color.
It can be quite easy (though maybe very time consuming), once you have the art base planned out.
I'd always reserve black for pure outlines, and then do the base color of all the things. Then You go back in with darker shades to do some shading, but yah - square by square. Might seem arduous to some, but to me it was relaxing and pretty fun to make.

well, now that piece is a little bit old and my technique has improved... I used to do all the outlines completely black, but now I use very dark shades of the color to do the outlines, and use pure black only in the darkest spots, it helps the lines to come out from the drawing, adding some 3d feel to the lines as well as the coloring. I used to pixel with Paint when I was a kid too (like, ten years old x3) and I also did some animation with a little tool called unfreeZ... ah the good ol' times xDD

Unfortunately I lost all of my works of when I was a kid in some random HD format. I lost a lot of things in formats: art, rpgmaker games, written stories :V

hi i know you might get this alot, but i really am wondering how you do pixel art... may i inquire how you go about this?

uhm actually I started only lately after a looooong time so I don't have a lot of useful advices... there are a lot of useful tutorials on the net (if you go to pixeljoint.com you can find some good stuff). I also inspire a lot to my fav pixel artist Paul Robertson (though this drawing in particular has nothing to do with his style) whose stuff can be found on his own blog x3
for this one I used photoshop. Now I'm trying some other program to see if they fit me better x3

yay im glad :3, the slime is tiny XD i was working at pixel view and i was like "This takes up alot of this page... hope its big enough" of course when your zoomed all the way in something that looks big is very small >3> lesson learned XD

you should try to work at fixed dimension, like 8x8 16x16 32x32 etc. that way you can't be wrong x3
