Kalib kept a firm grip on Blackie's halter as they strode into the arena. There was a small crowd behind them and the judge standing with a clip board and a pen.
Silence.
Blackie snorted and paced a little; Kalib kept a straight face. They waited. The stallion tossed his head impatiently, darting an eye to Kalib who's face was like stone. Blackie didn't quite realize how important this phase was. This, in fact, was just about as important as the actually competition. If they didn't pass this, they couldn't compete.
Of course, Blackie had been part of many inspections, many different vets and handlers and way to do things, but none quite like this. This inspection had already seen 3 horses sent home because they weren't in perfect health.

He stood up straight, flexing his neck muscles as the vet paced around him, admiring and criticizing every contour of his body. He ran his hands down his legs. Around his quarters. Up his back. Opened his eyes and nostrils a little wider. Checked his hooves and then stepped back for a wider view.

"Can you please walk and then trot him." He said pointedly. Kalib obeyed, barely needing to apply any pressure on the halter to have Blackbird floating beside him. They walked across in front of him, and tracked back in trot, taking this into a large circle, letting Blackie show off his movement.
"And now release him from the halter and have him trot naturally."
Kalib nearly replied with a question, but stopped and did as he was asked. Blackie was quite confused as to why his halter was removed, but didn't complain, and with a first push on the shoulder, he was off at a trot. He extended right out, threw his head down then up, gallivanting across the school.
"Very good. Thank you."
