Picture this. You’ve been off work and off exercise for far too long, you tell yourself, and so you start working out again – or more like your partner makes you work out because they simply like being an ass.
You’re lumbering around, feeling like you just want to lie down with a can of coke in the sun but you know if you stop you’re gonna be made to go for even longer – so you keep going. Your belly’s far too big, your legs seem like jelly and your bed is calling you ‘come to bed! Just lie down and sleep! You don’t have to work!’
Yeah… that’s what Dez was feeling. The hefty 17hh Thoroughbred was never exactly light on his feet, or light in any sense of the word other than his coat color, and felt like merely toppling over in the red sand, having a good roll and lolloping off to his stall again. But nooooooo!! Kimber wouldn’t let him do that! Noooo! He had to work for hours just because ‘she was growing out of Lolly’.
Bitch.

“C’mon Dez,” Kimber urged, pushing him into a trot and riding around the arena once before motioning for a canter. Dez obeyed, picking his body up and attempting to collect himself before he reached the jump. “Deezz!” Kimber muttered in frustration, increasing the pressure and sitting back in the saddle, trying to keep him together in an awkward fashion – she was used to Lolly doing it herself and this was an unpleasant change from the steadfast, reliable Mustang mare.
Her change from Lolly had come rather abruptly; not only was jumping her becoming more of a difficulty, but the mare seemed to be developing a weakness in her hindlegs – due to being wild-bred – and jumping her wasn’t an option any more. Therefore, reluctantly, Kimber took Dez back into training.
She rode him regularly as it was, but more as a pleasure horse, and had never done any serious training with the stallion, but they knew each other well enough, so didn’t expect it to be a problem when they became close partners.
How wrong she was…
The first thing you must remember here is that Dez was born, trained and competed as a flat racer, it was in his blood, and so, naturally, when faced with a poll and sticks, he did what any thoroughbred would – bolt.
When first confronted with the ‘abomination’, as Dez would refer to it when conversing with the others, for a solid fortnight, the stallion refused to get closer than a horse-length to it. He seemed almost adamant that it would spring to life and try to ‘eat him’.
Naturally, this was more than a little discouraging to Kimber who, at only 13, still had high hopes of becoming an international competitor – but that couldn’t exactly happen if she didn’t have a horse to ride.
Nevertheless, she persevered, and within a month, she had him trotting over polls – thanks to Frankie’s ingenious idea of leaving Dez in his stall with a giant poll wedged in the corner and not taking it out until he’d stopped freaking out about it.
Another month passed, this time he would lumber over polls 1ft off the ground, and his strength and confidence increased as these were raised to 2ft.
The first real progress was made when Dez began to trust Kimber more, and their daily sessions in the main outdoor school weren’t half as much as an ordeal as they once were and they would find themselves closer than ever as Dez used Kimber as his rock and took the jumps in his stride.

Despite this, however, the big crème stallion wasn’t exactly graceful. To use the word again, he lumbered over everything, threw himself at others, and if he didn’t touch the poll, Frankie and Kimber would count the entire session as a success. Therefore, as the days progressed, and little progress was made, Frankie told Kimber that the deal was off and he was out.
As expected, Kimber was distraught. Her only chances of improving her jumping skills were rapidly decreasing due to the fact that she could no longer ride Lolly. Her other options were: Sky, who she seemed at odds with all the time and the last time she’d tried to ride him, the big ‘brute’ had bucked her off into a wall, Whytt and Catch were both too young and green, which left George as her only option.
This was less than perfect. The gelding was extremely sweet, but still rather small (15.1hh) and the kind of crossbred that never had much potential. He had less than a tiny flair for English disciplines, and the last time he tried to jump, he stood for 10 solid minutes pushing the poll with his nose gently until it fell out of its cups and he tentatively stepped over it.
Nonetheless, Kimber decided she’d take it in her stride, but as she came to the barn, her mind switched, and instead of getting out the reliable gelding, she went in and took Dez straight out into the arena.
After a week of doing nothing, Dez was less than enthusiastic, his head down and her grunted incessantly, trying to wander back to the gate when she let the reins go. However, she soon had him trotting around, and taking little jumps over and over, helping him to judge the strides with her seat and voice, having taken to yelling ‘hup!’ when he was to take off for the jump.
Within an hour, she had him clearing 2’6’’ panels, nearly getting some scope over it and picking up his hind legs as he landed as not to knock them.

Frankie stood behind one of the buildings, watching with proud eyes.
