Description Well, he's finally finished. I'd say between the initial 2D design and 3D sculpting this was probably around 25-30 hour job. Then again, I've been known to noodle for hours and hours. I've got a few other things planned for this little guy. Oh and here's the original for comparison.

Awesome cartoonish 3-D render, I really thought it was a painting from the thumbnail!

Thanks man! I've been meaning to upload a few turn around images showing the wire frame--thanks for reminding me.

Dude your renders are so clean! What package do you use?

Almost always Maya and mental ray

DAMN--they're so nice! Well that's good to know it's all straight mental ray. I need to work a lot more with it when I render (and when I create lights/shadows). My only decent render so far concerning mental ray was the "Behold the Bunnypuss," one.

This is probably my best attempt at capturing the essence of a 2D character in 3D.

I love it! Disturbingly appealing, and you nailed the shape! What kinds of surfaces/shaders was this textured with? 'Cos I've been wondering how to avoid "plastic" 3D characters in the future...

Baron-Von-Jello In reply to LilypadDork [2011-05-07 20:29:19 +0000 UTC]

Well he was modeled with polygons, and I just used colored lambert shaders in Maya to get that really flat vinyl look. Lambert is pretty much a generic flat shader. Phongs are really good to use if you turn down the Cosine Power and Specular color. You get a nice natural shine without it looking too plasticy. What program are you using?

Maya, with lamberts. But I didn't play with the phongs much. Thanks!

awesome work man, you should get it 3d printed and make it a toy, I know I would buy one especially if it was a DIY blank version. great job as usual dude. keep up the great work, looking forward to the next piece you post.

Baron-Von-Jello In reply to CrumpSmash [2011-05-08 05:12:35 +0000 UTC]

I actually did already get it printed ! I was gonna wait to post the pictures of the RP figure along with the final renders I made of it. A friend of mine at work is going to show me how to make a mold of it so we'll be able to have a bunch of vinyls made.

I virtually never see OCs make it this far into development, and you did it in fiine style, sir! Marvelous!

I think it'd make the perfect "stuffed plush", and I can see the headline now: "Watch out kids, a new stuffed doll coming to stores and bedrooms near you!"

Turning this into a plush is a fantastic idea...I wish I knew someone who can sew .
