Hahaa, that's really neat.
I've been scouting my streets for roadkill with no luck, though. :[

You can tan with egg? I didn't know that.

Yep, it's the same as brain tanning, just very slightly different ingredients. Try Googling it. :3

*goes to look*
Yeah, I saw that once before, unfinished, it's really pretty(nicer than mine, I daresay. xD ). Did you get the idea from that one brain tanning site too, or is it an original pattern you came up with yourself?

Oh, how do you tan stuff?
Foxes are really rare here, I found one but like it too much to cut up...

i strech it out first in the sun, and if you bit can get some, borax dries it out really well as well, just be a careful, i was also told to try using the oily fat and greese from the animmal itself.
i've also used some salt (but can have problem drying with this method as salt attracts water some times)
hope this is helpful ^_^

variation, it a way of raw hiding it, the fat is like brani tanning, i would say if you brain tann you will want to get vaccinated for rabies as the main tissues infected is the brain. so to be safe , but yeah kinda like that ^_^

I use an egg instead of brains, it's the exact same process though.
Wouldn't it be kinda stiff if you only use the grease already on the hide?
I did that with a squirrel once, and it was barely flexible at all.

you then "crack it (or rather i cut the raw hide off lol, , i was also told its best to roll the skin end across a sharp corner ^_^, it hard to explain but this is how i've done both, i know the salt changes the texture of the skin some ^_^
kinda hard to explain , it something i had to acually do before i relized how well it works ^_^

You have to do that stage with egg tanning too, I just wonder if it comes out almost as supple as a garment tan(it seems like you'd need to add more "grease" for that or it'll sound crinkly when you bend it and if you get it wet it might return to rawhide status.)
I did a squirrel the way you're talking about once, and that's how it came out for me. After I redid it and rubbed some egg in, it came out much softer.

yeah it depends i think, as i was tanning a deer hide(neighbors dog made off with it) and it was streached out perfectly for garment tan...v_v
it is one part straching and one part grease
most of mine i would prefer not to touch water, the one i used the salt on i wouldn't mind though because it turned out better i think then the others(i wish i knew how to replicate it because it would be come my standard)
also some people will tann it multiple times as well ^_^

It just looks small, he was a decent-sized raccoon. O=
I was originally going to use my smaller one for this, but he's missing half his whiskers for some reason. >.O
