Besides making like an E3 booth babe for actual or prospective shareholders and investors, the courier had yet another invitation to hand out at the event. The golden ticket was unnamed but her recipient designated, and Reilly did not have to wander far or look hard for her.

Emilia Green was a living legend in MMA, considered one of the best if not most profitable of all time. Partially retired, “Miss PPV” had gotten more involved in the business side of things as Combat Sports Director and executive board member at McMango Corporation; and, while no one would claim that Mango Corp was as linked to VCW or Pantheon to make it the third leg of an intercontinental triad, both Andy Law and Faye Morgan were glad to have such an esteemed member of Kait McMango’s group present and visible. Clout was clout.

“Uh, Ms. Green?” Ciara interrupted the seemingly preoccupied Empress of the Octagon. The slight scowl on Emilia’s face prompted the lava-haired courier to keep things short and sweet. “I’m Ciara Reilly of Pantheon, and I have here an invite to our Invitational Tournament. With our General Manager’s compliments, for any fighter that the McMango Corporation would like to send.”

“That so?” Green reacted, scowl receding. “And how big a tournament is this? Who’s involved?”

“32 participants,” the encouraged Reilly answered. “And they’re a colorful lot. Maybe you’re familiar with Jean Grey and Shanna 1600? We’ve also got this six-foot-three amazon, a vampire lady, a convict, magazine editor, this tatted-up underground fighter with green and purple ha--”

“Yeah, that’s interesting,” Emilia said with dubious interest. “But are there any fighting brands involved? That’d help if I’m gonna be pitching this to Kait.”

Ciara mentally drew up participants’ names and their affiliations’ names, those she knew firsthand and those secondhand through the referee grapevine; herself, Devon, and Vash having privately been splitting the field into their favorites, contenders, dark horses, and sacrificial lambs. A good number of acronyms to recall.

“Yeah, for sure! We’ve got WME on board... RWF has a fighter... the AWL , EFFA , LWA , AWCC ... talent from X-R Club , maybe you haven’t heard of them yet.. Ready Fans , FLOW , FAWN , Rival Angels ... a big name from VICE , uh... this one girl from NNW ... and, um... someone from GDX . I mean, I, I’ll even be heading to the JSG with an invi--”

“Relax, Reilly,” Green grinned at the increasingly anxious salesgirl. “You sold me.”

“Stop the presses,” returned the all-too-familiar voice. “Someone from Syracuse had the brain power to close a deal? And to my good friend Emilia!”

Ciara glanced over her shoulder to find Faye up close, staring down at her like a bird of prey.

“So how’s your boss gonna reward you, Ciara?” she asked familiarly. “New car? Nah... someone’s getting a set of steak knives!”

“You know this one, Faye?” Green detected.

“Oh, I do indeed, ‘Milia!” Morgan chirped enthusiastically. “One of the biggest wastes of time and effort to walk out of VCW... after me and my resources just weren’t good enough to satisfy her dream of becoming the next wrestling icon.”

Reilly pursed her lips as her rep was besmirched by one company’s executive board member to another’s, knowing that VCW’s investment in her was no more than the basic afforded their prospects; that the real cost was to Faye’s ego, her grand offer of fame and fortune having been rejected in favor of friendship and integrity.

“So your protégé joined up with the competition,” Emilia gathered, an accusatory stare in Reilly’s direction.

“Mm-hmm,” nodded Faye. “But I’m not one to hold grudges. Ciara, you just have to tell us what it’s like wrestling for Pantheon!”

As badly as Ciara had wanted to talk back to Faye seconds earlier, the junior referee was suddenly hesitant to say anything.
