I add a layer set to multiply

now i have a layer of lines (normal), a layer of normal color (multiply) and another layer for shading (multiply)

I have the whole doge selected with my select pen

I color over the whole thing in one color i feel will shade nicely,(this time i used blue) in my new layer

the drawing should look a tinge darker after you do that

then i erase splotches of the color and the remaining creates the shaded effect uvu
