Description On mature thinking, I made a rvised version of this drawing:Β  www.deviantart.com/batworker/a…. Most probably, Yamatocetus as well as other Eomysticetids had a flat head top. And well, it definitelly had no true melon.

So, did mysticetids have melons at any stage of their evolution?

As I finally understand it, no. This "blotch" (on the previous version of the reconstruction) is apparently not a completely correct interpretation of the soft tissues of the head and not connected in any way with the "melon". It is believed that Odontocets acquired echolocation already in the process of becoming Odontocets (that is, obviously after the divergence of suborders). Again, if the β€œmelon” is the β€œlens” for the echo sounder, then in the case of the early Mysticets it should have been located at the end of the muzzle: their nostrils are still far ahead of the eyes.

They never had to use echolocation so probably not.
