Description PTP

For the english version, look at the end...

I had this idea long ago. Maybe near of one year ago. Anyway, the important point is that I finally did it! It is my first try in Cubism art like! Lol!

What do you think?

So much has been said about this pic. Dont know if this could qualify as cumbism, a broken portrait yes, but no cubism. You should treat every piece as what it is, regardless of genre, shouldnt care about classifications that much. I dont like the statement in the title "cubism art", because it takes me back to works by Picasso and his colleagues, a pointless comparation. You should avoid this kind of references; What I mean: If the picture looks cubist someone will point it out, dont spell it yourself.

The portrait looks pretty neat, the expression and light are well achieved, the outlines are a miss in my opinion. If you are going for a realistic approach in shading and lighting, lines should be avoided, they flatten the image. Unless you use dark lines to mark the shadows of what would seem to be flat panels, in that case dark lines for the ones contrary to the illumination and bright ones for the illuminated ones.

The background I think is untidy and a little random in its execution.

Hope thats clear.

Very nice form, and color choice.
I'd say that the piece is a little bottom-right heavy in terms of composition, and your signature is a bit distracting, but the piece is very lovely overall.

Wow, your first critic read WAY TOO FAR into your title/color scheme.

My only suggestion would have been to make the eye a little more expressive (but maybe you wanted it neutral for a reason). Aside from that, I love this.

Instead of falling apart, the "pieces" look like they're converging in on one another, almost compressing. Very cool effect.

I don't know what MeisterP is talking about. Your colors work well--a higher contrast with more vibrant colors would have taken away from the form. The Grey/Green focus Beige/White background works splendidly.

bad bad bad .... why the heck do you paint such a nice cubistic style and then do something like choosing an old copper colour and the title Broken Life ??? Ack... it doesn't fit together. I mean your style is quite modern and really well painted. It's just that right now the content and expression don't fit. Right now it doesn'T express life at all. With the grey green it looks like a statue... why should the life of a lifeless object be broken ? This title needs living colours and maybe even facial features of an aged face. Something that shows the life and then how it is broken witth the cubistic approach. I would also agree with just some cubes being life like and others like dead you know... not just a shattered statue like it is right now. Well .. as it's on canvas you can't change.. but keep in mind that it helps to enclose such thought into the creation process

Be carefull when you start a message by something as injurious as "BAD BAD BAD"... Usually, it is consider as an insult.

Sorry to tell it but I accept the critic but the way you say it almost look like a vengence or spite. I can see the diference but some people don't so if you don't whant to collect injures, just change the way you critics.

Well the idea WAS to use a stony monochrome color. I whanted it to loke lifeless, like someone turned in stone and broken by an awfull life. I can't see why vivid colors would be better to show something that is supose to be sad. Something else, the cubism is not suposed to be only painted with vivid colors too. I supose that you don't know a lot about this period. Anyway, just take a look on "Portrait of Ambroise Vollard" it is something pretty monochromatic and the colors are pretty "stony" too. I don't whant to injure you or to reject the critic but it is jut that I don't see the point you mean, the colors and the title was the concept that I had in head when I painted it. Con you please be more clear?

Thanks again.

MeisterP In reply to bdec [2007-01-17 22:49:05 +0000 UTC]

see you are taking it on much stronger after I started it with bad bad bad

Well ... so what do you want to do ? Do something like somebody else did it ? Well as you want to do it like Picasso ... have a look at the way the face is still in colours similar to life in "Portrait of Ambroise Vollard". That's exactly what I want you to think about. Maybe I should have said "lifelike colours" instead of vivid colours. Just showing everything lifeless denies the process of losing this vitality. But without this dynamic content it's well ... not as good as it could be ... at least to me. so ... clearly said. Don't just show the dead person shattered. That's the process at the end. Show how life is killed by sadness and move from livign colours to dead colours.

and.. well it's analytic cubism (beginning 20th century)... just because not everybody is into your favourite style is no reason for looking down on them
