- Short-Tempered | Overly Critical | Socially Awkward | Proud
When you first meet Toshiro he comes across as a withdrawn, grumpy guy who seems to have a penchant for giving short, curt replies. He's quick to anger and incredibly abrasive, and when his nose isn't in a book it's held high in the air while he gives his no doubt unwanted opinion. He seems to be one of those typical jerks that's out to make everyone feel worse about themselves, but underneath all of that grumpiness is a shy teen who puts a little bit too much pressure on himself. He easily gets anxious talking to other people, even those he's known for a few months, and try as he might Shiro is unable to break through that layer of anxiety keeping him for connecting with others. Thus he pulled himself into his shell at an early age, seeking the shelter of books instead of going outside of his comfort zone. Like most people there are times where he accidentally says something stupid, and instead of laughing it off and going about his day he spends hours kicking himself over it. He's hyper critical of himself (and to an extent others) and is often trying to live up to his own unrealistic expectations. Regardless of his quick-temper and awkwardness, Toshiro is very perceptive of situations and how people react; he chalks this up to his wallflower nature, spending a lot of his time observing others instead of socializing. While this can be beneficial in certain situations (like missions) they are detrimental in others. Toshiro may put on the 'I don't care what you think/feel' persona, but he takes how other people are feeling to heart, and feels awkward and ashamed when he makes someone feel hurt or disappointed. This leads to him lashing out at other people in spite of himself, using his less redeeming qualities to cover up his timid nature.
Despite his shyness when it comes to social interactions, Toshiro is very courageous in other aspects of life; he isn't afraid to take on strong opponents and refuses to let hard work go unnoticed, and if he has an opinion you know he's going to let it be known (angrily, ofc). He is incredibly proud of who he is and what he does, and his dignity has been known to go to his head on more than one occasion. He adamantly refuses to believe this, that is until he's laying awake at night kicking himself over all of the things he did 'wrong' and realizing that maybe his level of pride isn't that great of a thing. But ehh, technicalities. The plus side of to his large ego is that, when given a job, he will do everything in his power to complete it to the best of his abilities. There will always be hiccups of course, especially taking his irritable nature into account, but any responsibility given to him will be taken as seriously as a S Rank mission. You need someone to do paperwork? Bruh he'll volunteer himself and his team. Gonna give him a D-Rank mission? Better hold on to him cuz he's gonna pass out from joy. This can make him out to be an exasperating teachers-pet (because I mean, who volunteers to do paperwork??) but at least you'll know when given a task he'll put his heart and soul into it. This also applies to when he finally start connecting with others as well; sure in the beginning of friendships he'll be grouchy, but he'll slowly open up and start treating them with the respect and kindness they deserve, albeit subtly. And eventually it'll get to the point where he'll be open and honest with them, being a fiercely loyal and dedicated friend. Overall Shiro is just a shy, grumpy guy still hiding away in his shell who works hard for everything he earns and wants to make sure people know it.

BACKSTORYToshiro's was born into a small civilian family with his mother, father, and soon to be younger brother. They owned a small restaurant well known for serving a variety of smoked meats, and household/restaurant were always very welcoming and energetic places. Thanks to his moms' influence, when Toshiro wasn't helping out at the grill he was spent a lot of his time reading books; autobiographies, fiction, nonfiction, you name it he was more than willing to read it. He found a lot of his role models by doing so, many of whom were ninja. With this and the fact that his irl role model, his older cousin, were all ninja it was only natural for Shiro to become passionate about becoming one himself. His parents were very apprehensive about his enrollment into the academy at first, worrying about his safety and prefering for their eldest son to take over the restaurant when he was of age; in spite of this they knew that Toshiro always found a way to do what he wants, and after one particular fit-throwing night by their son they caved.
Toshiro was beyond ecstatic, and the night before he entered the academy he could barely even sleep; his mind kept racing as he thought about all of the fun he'd have and how ~popular~ he'd become. He was ready to tackle any and all challenges thrown his way and befriend as many classmates as he could! That is until he actually got there and realized he had no idea how to talk to people outside of his family. It never clicked in his mind that, since he rarely spoke to anyone besides his family in the shop and always avoided conversations with the customers, that this nervousness would apply to kids his own age too. Not knowing what to do with himself, Toshiro buried his nose into his books and murmured out terse, anxious replies whenever someone tried to speak to him. Eventually people stopped trying to converse with this weirdly irritable teachers' pet, and the majority of his academic career was spent like this. Shiro did all of the work that was asked of him, trained grumpily with his classmates, read his books during his lunchtime, and went home to release all of that pent-up talkative energy. Every night he thought up a plan on how he'd approach people and actually start connecting with his classmates, but when morning came he'd put it off until the next day. This went on for so long that by the time graduation was the corner he barely even had any full conversations with any of his classmates, let alone made any true friends. He knew that he was going to be put onto a team with two other individuals for years to come, so with nervous excitement Toshiro decided it was time to buckle down and break out of his shell.
TRIVIA - Toshiro's voice!
- Says things that he doesn't really mean a lot, he just gets flustered easily and his brain starts sputtering
- He's left-handed!
- Yes he does try to imitate those 'cool and suave' protags he reads about in books, and yes he ends up failing horribly and can be seen running away in embarrassment
- He judges a lot, but it's typically because he's projecting his own unrealistic standards onto others
- When using hand signals with his teammates, Shiro's favorite sign is the middle finger
- Helps out at the restaurant a lot, will die from embarrassment if any of the other ninja he knows stops in
